Maybe this is an opportunity to teach your kids to be tolerant, inclusive and understand that the world is diverse. In FCPS, people with different religions should have equal opportunity to practice their believes. After all, all FCPS students have to pause their schooling so that some students can celebrate their religious holidays. At least, the bus driver's behavior won't cause learning loss.

Perhaps employees of a public school system could use this as an opportunity to be tolerant, inclusive and understand that the world is more than christians. Changing a radio station to as to not offend everyone else is a very small ask.

but that still leaves the student with a missed opportunity of receiving a valuable lesson in tolerance, which the student needs in their long life ahead even more than the part-time bus driver?
Parenting 101: teach tolerance to your own kid before teaching ways to hate a bus driver for their radio station preference.

What tolerance does the child need to learn? That religion shouldn’t be shoved down their throat? I agree, but again, that onus is on the driver. No need to force students of a public school to have religious propaganda shoved in their face by a public school employee.

If you think asking someone who represents public schools to avoid religious propaganda as ‘hate’, well I think it’s clear what side you’re on. And it’s not the side of tolerance for all.

They learn the unfortunate unsophistication of adults who somehow don't understand the separation of church and state.

I don't feel offended. I am not a Christian.

Good for you? Other people were. Do they not matter?

The employed adult working for a school district has the higher burden here, not the child. The adult should behave responsibly and change the station. They are free to listen to religious music basically any other time, but while representing a public school (and getting paid to do so), they should change the station.

NP but honestly? No. People who choose to take offense at trivial every day occurrences do not matter in the least. They should be ignored like toddlers throwing tantrums.

What is the safety issue?

DP. They won’t be able to hear sirens approaching, for one.

Ah yes, keep preaching that tolerance!

Oh c’mon. Now you’re being ridiculous. Listening to the radio does not preclude hearing sirens. Do you tell your kids to be silent on the bus so they don’t interfere with sirens?

It’s clear that you as a parent also don’t understand what tolerance means and also don’t understand that music from a radio is not “shoved in their face.” You must also think that the music at the grocery store is “shoved in your face.” Do you ask them to change it?

Ignoring them IS a form of tolerating them. Tolerance is not the same as accommodation or acquiescence.

The school bus is an extension of the school house. Imagine if the principal decided to play Christian or Islamic or Jewish music over the speakers. It is unacceptable any way you look at it.

Again, this is not a Christian private school and the bus driver is an employee of the public school system.

You know damn well all these people calling OP snowflake or otherwise discounting her views because it's against christianity would flip their SH*T if the driver was playing islamic music or prayers. But I'd wager that a muslim or jew would have more self awareness to NOT do that at a public school.

Why are christians always trying to skirt the rules and play victim when called out?

+1. Or imagine the driver was loudly playing an atheist podcast. The phone lines would be on fire

A school that played islam or atheist radio would probably have bomb threats against it from trumpers

It's the same parents who think Young Life is an appropriate extracurricular activity, when it also should not have any public school affiliation.

I WISH our high school had a Young Life chapter for our kids! Best part of my high school experience by far!

Playing it extremely loudly does.

You should check out the school cafeterias if you think radios are loud.

No, it's a private organization, not a public one. And if a store or restaurant plays Christian music, I can (and do) choose to leave. A kid on a public school bus can't leave.

That being said, as long as it stayed radio music, and didn't become playing sermons/bible readings or questions/statements about religion directly from the driver to the students, I'd let this one go. We need the driver too much to die on the hill of painfully crappy music 🤷
