I love music from all religions. It’s fun to listen to.

If the bus driver is sitting there lecturing kids and trying to convert them, that would be a totally different answer from me, but this is kind of ridiculous.

We have a bus driver shortage. Complain about unsafe bus drivers, not ones playing some music.

It’s not intolerance, there are lots of Christians in positions of power trying to push the limits of the establishment clause all the time. They are well funded and organized and continuously bringing cases like the recent football coach one and passing laws like the Bible teaching law in Ohio. The only way (and the best way imo, in our best available system) to combat that is to also fight (legally) constantly over where the line is and should be. I think it’s fair to say that people don’t really care that much about whatever the particular thing in each of these cases is, it’s more about the continual tug of war over the whole concept. I think the bus music thing is probably a bad choice of battlefield and that’s why I would leave it alone.

There are like zero Christians in power on the Fairfax County school board, and very few Christians on the board of supervisors.

You are using a fake argument.

Teach your kids tolerance.

Why is it always christians wanting tolerance toward them, but not remotely sharing the sentiment in the reverse?

Not true. Christians tolerate a lot.

Ummm ok

Again, there are prayer rooms in schools and we all know who they are intended for. Not Christians. Also the same people who use the rooms also have full employee accommodations during the day to use it when requested. No other religion is getting a 30 minute “prayer” break in their day.

It does NOT take 30 minutes to do a few rakat, even including wudu. That seems like an abuse of tolerance to me. 15 minutes should be enough time to wash up, pray and get back to class/office.

That's ridiculous. Not to mention the fact that you can make up prayer and Muslims in America have been doing it for decades. If it is disrupting the school day and/or other religions aren't getting similar accommodations, it should be scrapped. If it's that serious, go to an Islamic school. Imagine Catholics coming late/dipping out early for mass every day.

lol. Catholic school exists.

Their a minority your not, show some respect. A lot of xenophobia and bigotry against other immigrants and their languages/religions here.

Assimilation is a thing.

As for me not being a minority, you are incorrect.

Even if I were not, the point still stands. It would be disruptive to have kids constantly getting up and leaving class every day. The time of prayer changes and most of the time only the noonish prayer would be during the school day. Likely most kids just wait and make prayer up at home rather than getting up and leaving in the middle of a test or their classmate's book report etc.

Reasonable accommodations are a lovely thing and a feature of our American way of life. A great deal of assimilation is necessary so that we can all be Americans with one strong culture (and regional/religion/ethnic variation, but it can't be too great).

This is exactly my point, already assuming their not Americans, and I don't know why another religious group being able to do their prayers freely has anything to do with another playing their music. Them praying does not interfere with your life but that music does, it is bigoted.

Silly rabbit, tricks are for kids.

Assimilation can take a generation or two. There are indeed many American-born Muslims now, but let's not pretend that we have had Muslims in appreciable numbers for generations upon generations. Large percentages of them do have parents born in foreign nations and has such obviously have to work out how to adapt traditions and modify things a bit. Even your 50-year-old American born Muslims MOSTLY have parents born and raised in foreign lands. I don't know why you are acting like this is some big deal. It's a common thing and fodder for many novels, movies and stand-up comedy routines.

Christian music playing on a bus is not going to damage the psyche of a kid hearing it. A kid leaving in the middle of a test or working on a group project to pray is a minor inconvenience to others. What the child misses by popping out of class every day for 30 minutes is his/her problem and only affects other kids if the kid is a lab partner or member of a group project.

Not including of course, the ones who are indigenous black Americans, who obviously have been here for generations.

Tolerance and assimilation the two key ingredients to successful coexistence.

To OP, sounds like you have a really serious problem to deal with. I will pray that you find an answer.

Tell your kid to be grateful he is not in New York, because your entire family would be submitted to this:

Indeed you can do something: make sure FCPS doesn’t head this way. The bus driver would be nothing compared to it.

Well, what they miss is up to them, it shouldn't be a problem to others. the music is obviously a inconvenience to OP. Your picking and choosing.

Bus driver should be paying attention to the road and the bus when kids are on board.

I grew up in Fairfax county. Rode the bus for 6-12th grade. I do not remember the bus driver ever playing any music ever.

Aside from keeping religion separate in public school, loud music is not appropriate anywhere unless it is the generally popular kind that can be played at the grocery store or doctors offices.

This speaks to lack of judgement on the bus driver and you should call the transportation office to notify them. The quality of the bus drivers they have been able to hire has been low with a lot of drivers not knowing how to navigate and such and this kind of poor behavior underscores the difficulty in finding good people.

I am a God believer too and enjoy Christian music time to time but I would not blast it in a public place.

When I was in high school the driver put on a popular radio station.

I wouldn't play religious music if I were the driver but I wouldn't hyperventilate over it either.

Not the same thing. That is an actual prayer service, and it's not like the bus driver is blasting Joel Osteen or Billy Graham.

The Muslim equivalent would be Dawud Wharnsby Ali CDs.

If FCPS wants to work something out that drivers aren't allowed to play anything, that's fine.

Someone is likely to be offended/annoyed by something at some point.

Radio stations, news stations, sports stations whatever.

I call BS. No way the kids on any bus can hear any music, no matter how loud (and just where is he playing it from anyway? Buses don't have radios), and they definitely can't hear anything the bus driver says.

Definite troll post.

MAGA hats are worn by students in FCPS middle schools which is clearly against school policy so why can’t the bus driver play Christian music??
