This is actually a great point. Many on this thread should check out college gymnastics, where the old 10pt scale keeps the difficulty low enough that execution is prized! |
I was responding in large part to the “herky jerky missing landings” piece of the critique. There’s a weird focus on it in many of the comments I see about biles (especially when performing the biles ii vault). It’s like the landing is the only deduction people are aware of, and then they have the gall to put down these amazing athletes. And she stuck a heck of a lot of landings today! That first floor pass is just mind blowing every time. |
Gymnastics doesn’t have an artistic component, just difficulty * execution. If you want to talk “artistry” watch rhythmic gymnastics or figure skating or synchronized swimming. |
That's incorrect. The E score has artistry and execution components. |
I think if Ohashi had made it into the Olympics, she also wouldn't have been so much fun to watch. She would have been pressured to up her difficulty, at the expense of her style. She basically had "maxed out" on difficulty in NCAA which gave her a lot of flexibility for things like style, while also perfecting her execution. If I recall, she actually intentionally made that choice to go into NCAA vs. the Olympics route, for this reason. Simone Biles is not like, incapable of executing something perfectly, or of performing with style. She has made an informed decision to maximize difficulty while accepting deductions on execution, even taking penalties sometimes when needed. She's optimizing her routines to maximize scoring. She's playing to win, not to be fun to watch. |
So tell us what are your rules for us. What are we allowed to say. What are we not allowed to say. |
I mean, you can say the sky is green if you want, but we're still going to tell you you're wrong. |
Her height and acrobatic skill is mind blowing. But it's more than landings. I see it on the beam and the bars. She is incredible with the acrobatics but looks less fluid. She sacrifices fluidity for the difficulty. Some people like that and some of us find some of the hitches distracting. I can't help it, I notice. But I still think she's awesome and I admire her courage. |
Ok so what are the rules for us? You know what is right and wrong, so subjectiveness, you are here to tell us what is true and a lie. So what is truth. What should we not say, because they are lies. Funny you uses "we"--the whole world agrees with you? Or is it that you and God agree? |
DP. Since these are opinions, they can't be wrong. You are pushy and annoying. |
I think the real irony of this thread and the way that it has evolved is that the original critique - gymnastics is subjective - is actually what led to the current scoring system we have today, which is far more objective and precise. And as a result of that, gymnasts have stopped optimizing on subjective matters like "grace" or "style", and optimize on objective ones like difficulty. So, in the end, you get a sport that is actually highly objective, but not necessarily as fun to watch.
I don't know if we have two different groups of people or one group who is criticizing gymnastics as "too subjective" but also that Biles is "not pleasing to watch", but you can't have it both ways. |
The "you are wrong" troll is clearly unhappy and looking to spread her discontent. Ignore her. |
You are unhinged. |
If you're sick of it, stop watching. |
Look at the all powerful one, casting jugement again. "I declare, person I have never seen, you are crazy, based on my divine terms!" |
