College and University Discussion
Was she buying a house or looking at colleges? I guess she’d turn Harvard down if she got one of their dingy dorms. |
Hockey, what did you expect? |
Brandeis is close to BC and was founded by a Jewish organization after WW2. It’s about half Jewish but that doesn’t mean that non-Jewish people would feel out of place. Same with BC and Catholics. |
Does BU have the largest percentage of international students of any college? That number is insane!!! |
So we like diversity until we don’t? |
| What? How is pointing out the very high percentage of students as being against diversity? That makes no sense. BU is a large school, and having that many international students is surprising. Since internationals don't get need based aid, that means they are mostly full pay. It looks like BU uses internationals to subsidize a lot of the poorer domestic students. When the Univ of California slowly increased their share of international students, the legislature stepped in to reduce it. To put it in perspective, Berkeley caps ALL out of state students, including internationals, at 18%. 20% is crazy high. |
DP. UC capped OOS students because it's a public university. I would imagine that the large # of internationals at BU affects the culture in some way. It would be interesting to know if the internationals tend to hang out together, as is the case at other universities. I haven't seen much info on what the social scene/vibe is like at BU. |

Notes:
--what could be different about a UC school and BU? --"the internationals" |
| I'm merely "just pointing out" "That number is insane!!!" and "20% is crazy high." |
Cliques form everywhere, but since there are so many people from so many places, with so many clubs and organizations, you get a very culturally diverse vibe. |
+ 1 There are places for everyone. However, you will need to put in some effort to find your group. I also heard that kids jokingly say, 'Go to the west campus if you're an extrovert, go to the east campus if you're an introvert.'
Also, if you're a freshman, Warren is the best place to make friends in your first year. |
| Lived down the street from Tufts for years. Medford and Somerville are great. BC has a preppier vibe and locale. Medford/Somerville feel more Brooklyn-y -- BC is more like Potomac/Bethesda. |
| I don't get why southerners want to go to a very cold city. For that matter, I doubt students from India are clamoring to go to a place that would require them to buy a whole new wardrobe, icluding winter jackets and boots. |
Then you’ve never met the many many immigrants to Canada every year. |
You'd be surprised. All of Punjab has moved to Canada in recent years. |
