Accepting: Wootton High School - Humanities Program

Why would you bother applying only to end up your local school?

NP. It is a MoCo magnet program.

Troll.
There's no magnet at that school. I do know at least 2 kids who turned down privates for actual magnets.

I’m not the person who declined the ā€œeliteā€ schools for public, but a quick google search answered the question. This is a program offered by Wootton that you have to apply and be accepted into.

So perhaps they applied bc they wanted options if they didn’t get into this program.

Why do you all feel the need to judge what other people are doing? If this poster wanted to apply to all the schools and decline them, they could have. Perhaps the people the met at the schools were a big turnoff. Perhaps they realized financially it was a waste of money for them. Perhaps they did it as safety. The reactions to this person turning down the big schools feels as if it comes from a place of jealousy.

Oh thank goodness that Wooton has a special magnet for only Wooton area students (per webpage) and Potomac village has Chinese immersion elementary school with extreme preference for their catchment.

How do we live/work in a county who talks Equity out of one side of their mouth while this insanity is happening??

It's not a magnet. It's a program within a school and almost all MCPS high schools have specialized programs. There are actually more in the more mixed income areas than in the wealthier areas.

No one judging. I think people don't know the MCPS magnet applications were due before private decision were out. So a family's first choice could be a magnet program but it's really competitive to get in so they weren't sure of acceptance. The privates may have always been their second choice.

When all the cards were on the table and they saw they got in to Sidwell or whatever and the magnet they went with the magnet.

I think you’re in the wrong thread, at the very least.

They are basically of the same caliber. One is just cheaper.

I hope you are happier than we are. We were excited for our DD to go, but were very disappointed when she got there.

It will be interesting to see how well they predicted their yields. They probably have these declines built into their estimates but time will tell.

I don’t know if I could ever send my children totally boarding school regardless of how good it is even if it was 100% free. No judgments I get the benefits it’s just not for me in particular.

We felt the same way until our DC went. She loves it, and she gets to come home for visits every 4 - 5 weeks.
