I'm surprised this isn't a straight up rejection.

That’s a rude comment made to someone willing to share. GPAs are calculated differently and aren’t everything. I’m sure the student has some great other options too! Good luck with the decision making process!

Yes. But Asian male.

I am so sorry. That should not be the case - and race should not even be a required piece of the app.

Many Asian males get in

You do understand that doesn’t answer the question, right? The question is whether Asian males have to have higher qualifications to get admitted than other groups. I don’t know about UVA but that’s clearly what the Harvard data showed in the lawsuit pending before the Supreme Court.

This student has 4.4 GPA, which is the borderline cutoff for UVA. UVA doesn't care as much about SAT as it does about GPA. Many of the kids from my DC's school had an 4.0 UW/4.5+ GPA. This is definitely not the case to be claiming discrimination against Asians.

Or any other case for that matter. The conservative group's case that's at the SC is bogus too

From a USNews rankings perspective, they have zero incentive to distinguish between the kid who got a great GPA due to pandemic grade inflation and the kid who earned the same GPA at a more rigorous school: USNews doesn't ask for squishy measures of rigor, just for the raw numbers.

Oh- and girls have a disadvantage across the board, b/c when it comes to college admission everywhere except tech schools, we are now in the universe of affirmative action for men.

Explain 17:19 then. Perfect everything… but not first generation or URM. That kid should have gotten in

Actually, according to school stats one of the “Whites” took that kid’s “spot.”

High stat URM mom located in central Va chiming in. My kid was deferred from EA. We have yet to check if he got in during RD because UVA is not our top choice for Virginia schools. Without getting into it, I am not thrilled about recent events and the location of the school. For admitted Black URM, the school has had lower than average enrollment rates in recent years. Trust me, we are not taking your spots.

Except, if it is true that UVA is getting lower yield from URMs, they are probably admitting a higher percentage of URMs, so as to yield the number they need to meet their goals. Thus increasing the perception that URMs have an edge.

Mother of the black URM who posted above. Here is another data point. My son has a 4.4 boarder-line GPA. He was not TO and his score was in the middle 50% range. He was waitlisted and given a guaranteed Wise campus transfer option. I’m only posting to counter the false claims that URMs are stealing spots. Also, we do have a Governor’s school, IB, and math and science specialty centers in my area. Meanwhile we are celebrating that my DS unexpectedly got accepted to a top LAC tonight. Congratulations to everyone who got in UVA and other great schools tonight.

Wow I’m really sorry for your kid PP. To be flat out rejected from UVA and waitlisted at Tech with those stats is completely insane. I’m guessing your kid is interested in engineering and being an Asian male seems to be the worst thing to be for Stem majors. Has he been excepted anywhere else? I hope things work out for him!

Or maybe pp’s kid has nothing but gpa and sat score to recommend him. Good numbers alone don’t make you competitive anymore.

PP didn’t share anything what their kid had on their application besides grades. Other people share athletic teams, Eagle Scout, etc. GPA/SAT alone is pretty meaningless because, as previously noted, scores alone won’t make you competitive. You need to bring more. Without knowing whether pp’s kid does being more, you have zero basis to asset that it is “insane” this kid was rejected by UVA and waitlisted by VT.

This is my kid and yes, he has some great options. His profile is also more interesting than the straight stats would suggest.

It’s my kid and no way will I share more when I see the type of comments people have posted about him. He brings much more than his stats but I only shared those because that’s what DCUM usually shares. Now I see it doesn’t matter what else I share, these posters have already decided he is unworthy of VT and UVA.

Takeaway: just because your DC has a 1500+ SAT and a 4 point whatever GPA, doesn't mean they are a shoo-in. Be humble, apply to a wide range of schools ( not just T25), and be grateful wherever you get in.
