So because she and her right wing friends don't want their kids to see a book with a transgender character those books can't be in the library at all?

Well, now that you bring it up, she’d probably be happier if she didn’t have to worry about her children being exposed to the LGBTQ community on TV or other forms of media also.

Geez, I wonder how many teachers will be left.

These efforts are so dumb. There is this thing called the internet and no matter HOW parents try to censor what their kids review, they get it at school from their friends. TRUST ME!

So, how are they going to preserve privacy? When I was teaching, I would have parents try to get information out of me about students in my class who were not theirs. They would ask leading questions trying to find out if Johnny really was that much of a bully. Or, is Susie really the smartest kid in class. That type of thing.

I cannot imagine how this could be done. This is not just about teachers. Parents had the right to observe and were welcome in my classroom (though I cannot say I enjoyed having them there). Before COVID, parents were welcome in classrooms. But, it does have a downside. As a parent, I had another parent call me to complain about "johnny" (not my child) and what could we do to get the LD kids out of the class. I told her I was fine with having them in the class--that my DD enjoyed having both teachers in there. (My DD was academically at/near top of class)

“A Katy parent asked to have this children's biography of the former first lady banned at every grade level because, the parent said, it unfairly depicts former President Donald Trump as a bully and because Obama's reflections on race gave the impression that "if you sound like a white girl you should be ashamed of yourself."

It seems like this would be an excellent opportunity for her to discuss said human sexuality with her child in her own way. LGBTQ identities exist. It's not the world's responsibility to only allow them to be introduced to your children on solely your terms. It's called being a parent.

So the complaining parents are every bit as racist, whiny and entitled as we all imagined.

According to the Seattle Times, the Mukilteo School Board voted unanimously Monday night to remove Harper Lee’s “To Kill a Mockingbird” from the required reading list for ninth graders while still allowing for teachers to choose to teach the classic novel to students.

The board acted after months of discussion among teachers, parents and students, and in reaction to concerns over racism in the classic novel, first published in 1960.

I think there a conflation of books in the curriculum vs books in school libraries (i.e. book banning). Whether or not a particular book is to be taught as part of the curriculum can be debatable. I hope all can agree that removing books from libraries is not a good thing.

Are you saying there are no books that don't belong in a school library?

I didn't say that. There is generally thought and consideration on which books to include in the school library. Having some astroturfed parents group suddenly remove a book because it challenges their worldview is not a good thing.

+1

Just because right wing parents evidently don’t read to their children or encourage them to read doesn’t mean that there aren’t people whose lives are dedicated to literary works. Librarians and critics, curriculum developers, child development specialists - the books that end up in an age specific library select books purposefully and carefully.

I wonder what the YouTube histories of these kids look like. There parents don’t seem to put any parental controls on their internet access; just books that might give them an open mind.

Some of us do, in fact, restrict our children's internet usage. Unlike the parents of 8yos I've seen who apparently let them go on tiktok and Instagram. I encourage my kids to read a wide variety of books but I draw the line at explicit or disturbing content because they're not ready for it. Just like when my daughter was 5 and loved the Les Miserables soundtrack and I didn't let her watch it because she wasn't ready for depictions of prostitution, suicide, etc.

For the record, I think it's absolutely crazy to ban Maus. Beloved, Lolita, The Handmaid's Tale, etc I think would be best in high school libraries.

There are tons of books banned from schools. I would link some here, but you know what would happen.

Some parts of the country are just more comfortable with different forms of censorship. There really isn't anyone that's against censorship.

You wouldn't have to because you will be homeschooling. There won't be any teachers left in the classroom.
