In the past, SB members were always non-committal to neighborhoods, while at least pretending to listen. I never recall an earlier superintendent making promises or even getting involved. Staff was involved, but we never saw the superintendents.

It was mostly SB members doing the wheeling and dealing, but they were careful not to make promises.

Reid promised Walney Oaks. Somehow, they were taken totally out of the equation. And, those final scenarios did not include most of Crossfield.

I don't see them changing it now, but the School Board could if they wanted to do so. I don't think they will.

I still wonder if Kyle McDaniel and Melanie Meren will join together at the last minute to strike some sort of deal with everyone else to swap Crossfield and Fox Mill. They both seem pretty adamant about putting Crossfield at Skyview and keeping Fox Mill out.

I doubt it.

Meren wants to keep Fox Mill at SLHS but she will never stand up to RIO. In fact she seems very close to some of RIO moms.

McDaniel wanted to move Crossfield to Skyview. His concern was travel to Oakton and split feeder pattern at Carson. I think he initally suppoted moving both Crossfield and Fox Mill to Skyview although it seems he got enough beatings from RIO moms.

Meren and McDaniel's postions are not entirely aligned and I don't think they will broker a deal. Even if they did, they may get outvoted.

Does anyone know what the breakdown is?

Fox Mill and Floris kids at SLHS opted in. My kid reported kids from Hughes MS at the HS preview day for Skyview, so it wasn't just Fox Mill and Floris. I would guess that some where are 25 kids from FMES opted in this year. Keep in mond that FMES enrollment numbers are inflated by the JI program, so the kids going to SLHS from FMES is actually smaller then the enrollment at the school. It was probably roughly 50% of the 8th grade class from FMES opted in to Skyview. The Floris numbers at SLHS are pretty small as well. I am guessing the Hughes kids who opted in would be from Dogwood, maybe the kids who had been in the JI program at FMES.

I suspect that SLHS is also realizing that it is going to see an increase in the number of kids looking to pupil place to Skyview because it will be the closer AP school for lots of families. SLHS loses about 125 kids a year to Herndon for AP, that number might go up with an AP program at Skyview due to the difference in student bodies. Parents might be more comfortable pupil placing to a lower FARMs AP school then the higher FARMS AP school that had been the choice for most. And the SLHS community knows it. Some discussed it on Meren's FB posts.

According to the capacity dashboard only 13 kids transferred from South Lakes to Herndon this year (158 transferred from Herndon to South Lakes). When Skyview becomes an option for AP, the number of transfers out of South Lakes may increase substantially.

The SLHS map shows 157 SLHS students transferred out and 234 students transferred in.

158 Herndon to SLHS
35 Westfield to SLHS
15 from Oakton to SLHS
All the others are 1 student.

TJ got 31 students from SLHS
Langley got 28 Students from SLHS
Oakton got 11 students from SHLS
The Herndon Map shows 13 transfers in, I think I misread the numbers. My apologies 1 from SLHS.
Westfield got 1 student from SLHS
Chantilly got 1 student from SLHS
Centreville got 1 student from SLHS

The tracker also said that a 1 doesn't necessarily mean 1, just that there was movement from that school to the other school but under 10. So probably more then 1 to the 4 schools listed with a 1.

158 students transfer from HHS to SLHS? Likely motivated students too.

And we wonder why the school is losing kids.

There are 134 kids at Hughes MS from Herndon MS. Presumably most are there for AAP.

So that translates to roughly 268 kids in high school, a large number of whom decide to stay in the South Lakes pyramid.

However, if those kids were at Herndon HS it would still have well over 400 vacant seats to accommodate kids living nearby but in another pyramid should the need arise.

So it’s mostly AAP kids? That’s a huge brain drain from HHS. Seems like if they want to beef up the school that’s the obvious place to start.

I think they'd have to replace IB with AP at South Lakes in order to do that. Assuming that's what the Herndon families are using as the justification for the transfer. Doesn't seem like the SB has any plans to get rid of IB though.

+1. Both McDaniel and Meren know that Fox Mill is a very tight-knit community with parents who are vocal and actively engaged. Despite what gets said on this board, they generally have a good relationship with the Fox Mill ES community.

They don’t gain much by upsetting a community that has been willing to work with them. It would only create a situation where a large group of engaged parents becomes fully opposed to them.

Did they explain at the recent meeting the logic behind the new Brookfield split feeder? That one makes no sense.

Meren has a good relationship with the parents that want to stay at SLHS but has not engaged with the parents who want to move. The only FB comments she replies to are the ones that share her feelings. There are "I hear you" repliess on the keep SLHS whole posts and silence on the posts saying they are happy to be moving and why. Some of the people who emailed and posted on her FB page have found that they were removed from her mailing list. FMES PTA had asked to meet with Meren regarding the boundary changes and Skyview, she cancelled a meeting in November and I don't think she every rescheduled it. At one meeting in December she was asked about the Western HS and she said that the only people she know who wanted to move were families with nuero divergent kids.

No offense but there are a decent number of FMES parents who are hoping that there is someone decent to vote for that isn't Meren. She has lost a good number of votes with how she has handled this. She can have a different opinion, there are plenty of good reasons for her to disagree with me, but she has not engaged in conversation with anyone who disagrees with her in the neighborhood. It sounds like she has not much to engage in conversation with the members of the School Board either.

But on the flip side moving the transfers to South Lakes back to Herndon on top of the South Lakes kids moving to Skyview would be a huge brain drain from SLHS. If anything moving all these South Lakes kids to Skyview is an insurance policy for keeping IB at South Lakes since it becomes more dependent on the transfers for IB from Herndon to maintain its enrollment.

I think they have other plans for Herndon in a few years.

They are only trying to move nabes who don't vote in SB elections or donate money to them.

Brookfield was already a split feeder, which split between Franklin and Rocky Run MS before being made whole again at Chantilly. Consultants leveraged that existing feeder pattern to move Franklin kids to Stone/Westfield. Walney Oakes saw the writing on the wall, and were able to align themselves with Rocky Run during the Comprehensive boundary review, so that they’d be bound to what would remain the Chantilly MS feeder. The rest of Brookfield/Franklin was reassigned to Stone/Westfield.

I don't think they ever proposed moving Chantilly Mews area before the last round in either study (??)

There was at least one proposal to move Walney Oaks, but I don't think they ever tried to move the Chantilly Mews area previously.

They knew they had to move someone and they picked the schools/areas that would provide the least amount of fuss or political damage. It is crazy that Centreville is going to be over 100% capacity when there is a school near by that is going to be at 74% capacity.

This.

Also don't forget Meren emailed to Hunter Mill residents that Fox Mill ES should be moved to Hughes to fix the split feeder issue. She later said she was confused with Fox Mill Woods but you can see through her true intention (Fox Mill Woods was already going to Hughes!)

I live in Fox Mill area and will vote for anyone but Meren.

One of key takeaways from previous scenarios:

"Families don't want split feeders."
