How many kids from Coates, Floris, and McNair? That’s mostly Westfield and they should be the first moved to KAA. |
I think they are assuming that based on size of elementary schools from KAA area. However, those stats may not be accurate since there are likely fewer high school kids in the multi family housing. It would be interesting to see the actual numbers since we don't see those. Not saying it won't be a lot, but I don't see Westfield going below to 2000. Ironic, since South Lakes boundary study was based on schools being at a max of 2000 as desirable. Now, they want them bursting at the seams. |

FCPS really should take a few schools and make them Spanish language schools. Students who are ESL with Spanish can learn the subjects in Spanish for all classes except for their English class (which will be considered their foreign language for graduation purposes). These kids will learn so much more if they can learn in their native language (while also learning English for 1-2 periods a day). Tests/assessments should be given in Spanish.
We have children coming to this country who are multiple grade levels behind on all subjects that often times haven’t attended school in years. These schools could be considered Immersion schools with priorities of admittance for Spanish speaking ESL students. If parents want to keep their students at their regular zoned schools they would be their choice. 2-3 years to build foundational knowledge while also learning English separately will allow students to actually learn the subjects that they are being taught instead of focusing on trying to interpret everything that the teacher is saying. |
| I’m not advocating for using a school like Lewis for this idea, the new KAA high school could be used. |
It's not "ironic." It's the result of deliberate decisions since 2007 to allocate capital dollars to the expansion of schools in western and central Fairfax based on the assumption there wouldn't be a new western HS due to the lack of a suitable site and the high cost. You can dust off the "2000-student maximum" if it's convenient, but that hasn't been the policy or the reality in FCPS for almost 20 years. |
More: without the transfers in from Franklin, Carson would be just over 1000. I don't know what percentage go to Westfield, but Crossfield kids go to Oakton. Fox Mill is at South Lakes. A good sized portion of Floris is at South Lakes. Part of Coates goes to Herndon. A good number goes to TJ. I don't see Westfield losing 1000 kids to KAA as some have claimed. |
Says who? You? |
Everyone is left to guess because FCPS doesn't make information on split feeders and SPAs available available during boundary studies the same way APS and other school districts do. They like to keep people in the dark yet pretend they are transparent. |
And, remember, a good portion of McNair and Coates is multifamily buildings. You usually get a lower number of high school students at that level than elementary. So, defining the number by size of elementary school is another factor that may not be accurate. |
Under Scenario 4 Floris: 731 (let's say 25% goes to SLHS, then 548) McNair Upper: 627 McNair Lower: 571 Coates: 688 Total: 2534 Assuming a uniform distribution across grades, each grade would have about 362 students. 362*4 = 1448 1,000 is a conservatie estimate. Y’all don’t seem to realize how crowded this part of the county is. Everyone has been assuming that Floris, McNair, and Coates students will move from Westfield to KAA, but nobody has addressed what will happen with the massive enrollment drop at Westfield. |
You are not good at math, are you? |
Curious here. You are essentially double counting McNair. Do you know the difference between McNair Upper and McNair? |
I think some of Floris goes to South Lakes and some of Coates goes to Herndon? |
You're off. I actually did the math a few pages back - some of the schools also have declining enrollment with far fewer younger kids than older kids. You can kind of see this in the McNair upper vs lower numbers. |
