Anybody know the story of why the old one left?

How good is the CCL?

And to another point, experience will vary. I would worry less about "which club is better" and worry more about which coach is right for my kid. And that you'll have to dig a little to find out.

Hit up both clubs, try a few practices on and see which your kid responds to and likes best.

Is this really legit? Can I contact like the technical director or someone at a club and just say...Hey, I'm shopping clubs. Can I bring my kid by for a practice? Wouldn't practices at some of the better clubs be littered with a bunch of mixed talented kids ruining team practices?

Coach here...yup, totally legit. You'd be surprised how few of the kids on a good club team actually come from formal try-outs. We invite players all the time, many from unsolicited calls/emails from parents.
Also, a bunch of local programs invite non-roster players to winter trainings. Check the websites of the clubs your interested in.

McLean just sent out an email regarding the changes with FAQs, etc. and will start holding calendar-year-age trainings this month.

Could you cut and paste the email so we can see what they're doing?

Out of curiosity...any screening at all over the phone or email or is it just SURE! Come on over! What percentage are quality players vs kids that just aren't remotely ready? I just visualize these parents thinking their kid is a superstar and contacting McLean, Bethesda, etc. I do know that Bethesda holds winter clinics for non-rostered players. One of my son's teammates is participating currently.

Yes, the coaches will screen over the phone but I think you are under the assump That their phones are ringing off the hook.

Unless a kids parents are unhappy with their situation or feel that their kid is a bubble kid movement from club to club during season is pretty rare. Certainly coaches start fielding more calls in the spring but those are still only parents that are pretty serious about moving.

Sure, there's basic screening. Where are you playing now, why do you want to move, etc. If I know their coach and the parent consents, I'll call to see what I can find out.
The older the kids, the less likely that they have a chance...don't think that would surprise anyone...those early years are key to developing skills.
And yes, I'd say at least half of even the younger kids are WAY out of there depths.

I coached at a large local club in the younger age groups. There would usually be some screening, but with big clubs you have 3-4 teams in the age group, so regardless of the player's ability there may be a place he or she would be a potential fit. There is little harm in having a player out in the winter when things are more relaxed. We would have players out pretty often, some from rec, some from other clubs, some in advance of moving to the area. The coaches see how they are in a more relaxed setting away from tryouts, see how they handle feedback, if they learn, families get to see how the training sessions are and how the coach interacts with the players. If a player isn't ready yet, they get an idea of the level and what they need to work on and come back for formal tryouts. A more ready player may get some time as a guest player for a tournament if we were missing a player or may step right into a team. With rosters expanding every few years, families moving in and out of the area, etc, a good coach will usually have a look if a player is interested, as it begins that relationship.

Has Hank Leung had his role reduced at VYS? His picture has been removed from their technical staff page.

VYS says it will implement the new age rules in forming the Fall 2016 travel teams this spring.

Does this hold any weight in these soccer arguments that are always ongoing?

Not when ECNL and DA teams don't participate in State Cup. But I don't think anyone has questioned the strength or quality of CCL either.
