Exactly this. |
Yes I noticed. Souvenir from their trip? |
I think the show is definitely mocking people like Portia and Harper who live extremely privileged lives but make statements like "the world is on fire" or "with everything going on in the world" (from Harper's first conversation with Daphne/Cameron) without much sense of history or context. But I don't think the show is sympathetic to people like Daphne and Tanya and Essex boy who don't think about anything beyond their own day-to-day comfort and wellbeing. More understandable for Essex boy - he has had real struggles and can probably be forgiven for not worrying about climate change or whatever when he's just thankful to know where his next meal is coming from. But being someone like Daphne who just lives her super privileged life without ever thinking about the state of the world or how to improve it is not something to aspire to either. |
It is very en vogue to think the world is going to hell when in reality this is truly the best time to have ever been born. I’m not sure why people think acknowledging this means they think there’s no problems worth solving. But acting like this is a horrible time to be alive is a lot like Portia, sitting in a picture of Italian idyllic bliss eating ice cream focusing on how everything sucks. You don’t betray the problems by being grateful for what you have. |
There was a scene last night quiet with servers at the hotel setting the tables and there was an orange tree prominently lingered upon! Godfather references are strong! |
None of them are actually doing anything about it so at the end of the day better to be Daphne, doing nothing to help but happy, than Harper, doing nothing but miserable. |
Because it always means this. It is used as a way to shut down people who have concerns about present-day problems. No one is just randomly like "hey, don't you think this is the best time ever to be alive?" They're like, "stop complaining that things are getting worse - things are overall better than in the dark ages, I don't want to hear about [roe v wade or climate change or right-wing populism or whatever]" |
Gelato seems more likely.
|
Better for who, exactly? Also Harper has a public interest job and I'm sure she plans to use her new wealth to work on problems she cares about. |
What do you mean Harper is doing nothing? |
No, not at all because Portia was saying the world as a whole is worse than it ever was, which is an absurd statement by any metric (poverty, mortality, wealth, life span, injustice, racism, etc) |
Versus always being a victim |

T: I live for beauty
Q: but would you die for beauty? T: (pause) ehhh Q: (backpedaling) I mean, a world without beauty is a world not worth living in |
| T: hmm. I had better jet to the new White Lotus in Asia. See ya. |
yes those are the only two options. the old "i'm sorry you have cancer but you could have cancer AND be homeless AND beaten AND missing all your limbs. so suck it up buttercup" |
