Befoe children, I loved living in the DC and all that it has to offer. After having kids and working full time, DH and I are totally burnt out with the rat race-competitive work place, long commute, high cost of housing, crowded stores in the week-end, etc.. Challenge is to find a place where we could both get good jobs.
For those who left the DC Metro area, just curious whether you made the right decision? |
| Me, too. |
| yup |
| I'm really not trying to be mean but there is an exact discussion on this on average every two weeks on this site. Really, a lot of people feel this way. It's about trade offs. |
| Your life is what you make. You have some control and can chose to participate (or not). If you don't like it, change it. |
Monday - Friday: DH and i go to work with drop off and pick up at day care, we get home at 6:15, fix dinner, bath, put kids to bed, load the dishwasher, tidy the living room, and we go to bed etc.. Week-ends: Do an activity with the kids in the morning, run errands, clean the house, catch up on some personal e-mail since our family lives far away, etc.. This leaves us very litte/no time to do anything for relaxation, going out, meeting with friends. |
| Oh god, let's not turn this into another ad nauseam "I hate DC" rant. *&%#ing move or get over yourself. |
Welcome to adulthood. It sucks. |
I guess I don't see how this would be different if you lived outside of the DC area. I grew up obviously in a different time, in a different part of the country, in a less hectic and fast paced part of the country, and yet you just described a lot of the families I grew up around, slash the email. Sounds like you described life with kids, at most any time most any where. |
| Yes, we left (for Madison, ct). And yes, it's wonderful. I thought I would miss DC a ton (born and raised in gtown) but the amazing public schools, great quality of life, and 4 bedroom house with beach access for $900k made the trade off an easy one and DC a great place to visit 3 or 4 times a year. |
What kind of business/jobs do you have that you could do this? |
And how, exactly, is the quality of life better there? What makes the public schools "amazing"? I'm honestly curious. |
| 23:39 again. I work for Yale and my husband is a lawyer. |

Yes, it was the right decision. We moved to Hawaii (yes, the right decision in spite of recent tsunami warning!) Sorry, but adulthood does NOT suck. Life is what you make of it. |

I think I disagree with the PPs that say the DC burn-out would be the same in other cities/towns. I think there's something unique in DC. Haven't you had family/friends come into town and mention how unfriendly/uptight the people are here? Haven't you noticed how tense the other parents are? I've seen so many who are always jockeying to figure out what reading group your kid is in, what soccer team he's on, what school he's been accepted to. All of this competition on top of a very work oriented environment makes this a less fun place to live than many other places.
