Anyone else burnt out with DC lifestyle

Haven't you had family/friends come into town and mention how unfriendly/uptight the people are here? Haven't you noticed how tense the other parents are? I've seen so many who are always jockeying to figure out what reading group your kid is in, what soccer team he's on, what school he's been accepted to. All of this competition on top of a very work oriented environment makes this a less fun place to live than many other places.

Honestly, no. It seems to me that the people who complain about these things are the only ones who actually do them. (And most seem to be on DCUM.). The rest of us are just living our lives. Glad to live in an area with such diversity, culture, and some of the very best public schools in the country. Nice people too, if you know how to be one yourself.

Honestly, I am curious...where do you live that you meet these competitive parents? Is it really that different inside the city limits?

It's not the same in other places. Everyone I know who transfers in and out of the DC area like we have considers DC nothing more than a necessary evil. We do our time. We make the best of it for a few years. And then get the hell out. We enjoy life in the real world for a few years before we have to go back to DC again.

After having kids and working full time, DH and I are totally burnt out with the rat race-competitive work place, long commute, high cost of housing, crowded stores in the week-end, etc.. Challenge is to find a place where we could both get good jobs.

For those who left the DC Metro area, just curious whether you made the right decision?

OK. OP, first of all, if you have a long commute, you must not be living in DC at all. Let's be clear-- what you're complaining about is the suburban lifestyle.

9:54 - YES. YES. YES.

You have to be blind not to see what you mentioned. I would bet the people in denial are the nasty ones who try to bully their way into "oh, it must be you". BS. I've been here long enough to know there are nicer places to live. We don't leave because we are making money off the likes of you!

MWHAHAHAHAHAHAHA............

And get that constipated look off your face before I fire your ass.

I love living here and I don't by any means live a sucky existence. I too wonder where all these miserable people are? And I can't imagine living a simple life in some small town somwhere. Yes, life would be easier but I love what DC has to offer me. To each his own. There are plenty of great people here who enjoy this town and there are people who don't. You'll find that everywhere.

Nope! Love our life. Our neighborhood is 100% walkable to all amenities. I WAH full-time and DH has a 5 min Metro commute.

Our neighborhood is filled with tons of kids and great parents. Impromptu family happy hours almost every weekend, lots of local neighborhood events, etc. We have the city vibe with great public schools...and the free museums within a stone's throw.

Parents often go in on a sitter and walk to the local bars and restaurants at least once a week.

Would you consider giving up your worldly possessions and joining a tribe if you could? Or would it be too hard overcoming cultural differences? Sorry, I'm listening to Deep Forest and it made me think of this.

Please, what is the name of this neighborhood utopia?

Me too. Things are frustrating sometimes but wouldn't life be frustrating any where at times? YES. We love the job opportunities here and our jobs, we live close in and near a metro, we love our house and neighborhood. We make enough money to live comfortably, not enough to live near/hang with these real competitive folks. We have family nearby so it makes it seem more like home even though neither of us grew up here (my parents followed us for grandkids, our siblings aren't too far away). Also makes things a lot easier to have a support system. I can sympathize with folks who don't have a support system/family nearby and who have long commutes - that would do me in too. Absent of that, I really like it here.

This sounds like Capitol Hill except the part about the great public schools.
