Is VYS at all a relevant Club? Am I missing something?

It has a couple thousands kids playing for it, so ... yes.

(And a State Cup this fall. And its coaches just coached the Washington Spirit Academy to a Super-Y League title. So even if you only define "relevant" as "winning" -- which is ridiculous when you're on a board of parents talking about finding the best activities for their kids -- VYS passes the test.)

So, a couple of thousand kids and yet one whole State Championship and a coach that led a Summer League of kids from all around to a Super Y Championship is success and deserves nearly 100 pages of club discussion?

LOL

Because a couple of thousand parents put their kids in the program. LOL yourself.

(For the record, several of the Super-Y players were from VYS. Also for the record -- I have no idea why people don't talk about other clubs here to the extent that they talk about VYS. McLean has plenty of issues, but I guess all the discussion about that is done at the nail salon or something.)

Just seems silly that one average club generates so much discussion when much larger and more accomplished clubs like Loudoun go unmentioned.

It's a fluke of who's on this board. I'd love to read about what's going on at Loudoun, McLean, Reston, Great Falls, Alexandria, Arlington, Chantilly (CYA), Chantilly (CSC -- which seems to be falling apart), etc. But those folks aren't sharing.

What does "accomplished" have to do with how much information we parents are sharing? This isn't a newspaper. It's where parents come to discuss their kids' activities.

I'd imagine more parents would be interested in Little League info than they would in a travel baseball team, no matter how "accomplished" that team is.

We have some exceptional Olympic-sports athletes in this area, but we still talk about soccer more than those sports. Why? Because all our kids play it!

We left McLean. I thought the coaching was pretty good. Although there were two sets of parents who loved to stir the pot with rumors constantly. Said rumors would get back to the head coach and he felt it necessary to have lengthy meetings with the parents. Felt very much like High School. One of the biggest problems with travel sports around this area and maybe other areas too, is the parents feel it necessary to tell the coach how to play their kid or my "insert sarcasm" coaching their kid from the side lines. Have seen this done with soccer, baseball, travel basketball, etc. These high strung parents think just because they played the sport in high school some may have played in college that due to their background they have to coach their kid from the sidelines. It's completely disrespectful and idiotic at best.

There is nothing wrong with sharing but when you look at the title of thread and you see 100 pages worth of conversation one would hope to learn more about the local soccer scene than just VYS. And on top of that, if I was new to the area one would think that all this talk about VYS must mean that it is a power house when it just a average quality club that has parents that are willing to write 104 pages of club dirty laundry.

And yet, I got sucked in and read every worthless page of it and I feel dirty.

It's a Mafia and we are all too scared to speak for fear of retribution. I feel instead of bashing my club--when we've had our fill we will move on. My child (12) is the impetus for us moving to a new club this Spring. Kids can really tell when things are unfair and coaching is inadequate. They really need an entire age group shake up to fix placements from age 7-8 but it won't happen.

12 is when things start to get more intense and club movement is on a lot of parents minds. Some things are club based and ingrained and others are just about simple best fit and it just isn't worth the drama of the politics. After seeing the same coach for 2 to 3 years it can be time to move on. Lots of drama about club politics and coach favoritism all come into play but in truth, much of it is change for the sake of change.

It will vary by coach/age group, but our Head Coach has never seen any kids on the lower teams play in close to two years. Separate practices, separate scrimmages, separate games. When he is looking for a new player--he looks to outside clubs. It's crazy given some of the talent on the lower teams. This is why a lot of kids leave--a fresh set of eyes. Many end up making the top teams at other clubs.

There is also the dissatisfaction with practices, etc. We found our big club does not really know many of the players. There is no working on an individual player's particular weakness. The coach did not even know one kid was left-footed. It was really the lack of awareness (much less calling the kid by the correct name). After having to pay for outside training, we decided to look for a more personal club.

The PP is so true. It takes less than most coaches realize to have happy parents on the sidelines. Often, just acknowledge something you really like about the kid to their parents, no matter how trivial or obscure can go a long way with parents.

Was starting to look for some alternatives to travel, probably just for this spring. Does anyone have any thoughts about the quality of FPYC, Annandale, or Chantilly Suburban Friendship League teams on the boys side, any age? How does the SFL compare with ODSL or rec All-Star tournaments?

My guess is it would depend on the age some. The rec teams tend to stick together when they find either a good fit of friends and coach so the "club" may not matter. And who you are with at rec is probably more the point then the level of competition, which likely is a mixed bag. Rec will have some pretty good kids, who for whatever reason cant or don't want to play travel. many of the other kids are there because of a lack of skill or something.

But I would put the best rec at or equal with the lowest division of ODSL. Could be a good bang for the buck and a great experience for the right kid.

I coach a very good SFL boys team. We have several excellent multi-sport athletes who simply cannot commit to year round soccer. We have scrimmaged against the ODSL and NCSL teams in our club. Based on those scrimmages we are much better than bottom division ODSL teams, and are roughly equivalent to a Division 5 or 6 NCSL team. Same is true of a small number of the 50 or so SFL teams in our age group.

If you want to see which clubs/teams are the best in SFL at a particular age, you can go the SFL website at www.sflsoccer.org The top few teams in Division 1 or Division 2 will all play decent soccer.
