Sports General Discussion
MY kids play travel at VYS and we have never had a single issue. My kids love the program so far, we love the program. It sounds like the issue lies more with the abundance of high strung mommy's and daddy's in the area. From these posts it sounds like many parents think it is a thing, that your kids have to play for their neighborhood club. It maybe easy, but for many it is not the best fit, this goes for every sport nd every activity. I think it is a few people with an ax to grind, to much time on their hands, maybe a few that have heard a little too much information and do not know what to do it. Jane was great and it was definitely disappointing to see her go. We have heard parent complaints about VYS being disorganized and not receiving enough information. In the big scheme of things, it has been 6 months since tryouts, maybe a month more with the new TD and 4 months since the start of travel... Parents need to chill, have fun and enjoy watching their kids play soccer. The program is not THAT different now as it was 3 or 4 years ago. My suggestion is VYS get some board members that keep board gossip to themselves. If parents do not like VYS, training is not good enough move your kids elsewhere. Many of us are very happy. |
| Does anyone know anything about the SAM select soccer club? How does it compare to other Montgomery County travel clubs? |
It's about on par with MSI Classic. A step above rec programs, but well below the "real" travel clubs...Bethesda, Potomac, etc. |
| What's the relationship between Bethesda and Bethesda South? Do they compete with each other for players? Where does Bethesda South train and have their home games? I heard that Bethesda is trying to set something up in the Great Falls area. Any truth to that? |
| Home games at Maryland Soccerplex. |
Hopefully someone more familiar with Bethesda South will chime in, but my sense is that since they started with just a few teams in the younger age groups and practice in NoVa, Bethesda South has generally been serving a different market than regular Bethesda, which mostly attracts kids from MoCo and DC at the younger age groups. I know that at least one of the Bethesda South teams is playing in the National league this year, and others have played in EDP or region 1, so I expect they are or will be attracting ambitious kids who are willing to travel and don't find a closer Bethesda team that's a good fit. Like all Bethesda teams, theirs have a guaranteed opportunity to play in the Bethesda fall tournament, which is one of the things we like about the club. One of the Bethesda South coaches (Cuadros, I think) filled in for my daughter's coach at a game last year and she thought he was great. That's all I know! |
Also interested in info regarding where Bethesda South trains and plays. They seem to be fielding strong teams that live up to their "brand", I assume by attracting top Northern Virginia players who otherwise would find it difficult to travel to trainings in Maryland or to DC United Academy, etc. |
Looking at the website Bethesda South only has teams for U12, U13, and U14. Their tryouts last spring were at the park near INova Faorfax Hospital off of Gallows Rd. Not sure if any of this info helps. |
Sweet. So sick of our club. |

| I noticed that VYS seems to have gotten a new president over the past couple of weeks. Anyone know what happened to the old president? |
Is VYS at all a relevant Club? Am I missing something? |
It has a couple thousands kids playing for it, so ... yes. (And a State Cup this fall. And its coaches just coached the Washington Spirit Academy to a Super-Y League title. So even if you only define "relevant" as "winning" -- which is ridiculous when you're on a board of parents talking about finding the best activities for their kids -- VYS passes the test.) |
So, a couple of thousand kids and yet one whole State Championship and a coach that led a Summer League of kids from all around to a Super Y Championship is success and deserves nearly 100 pages of club discussion? LOL |
Because a couple of thousand parents put their kids in the program. LOL yourself. (For the record, several of the Super-Y players were from VYS. Also for the record -- I have no idea why people don't talk about other clubs here to the extent that they talk about VYS. McLean has plenty of issues, but I guess all the discussion about that is done at the nail salon or something.) |
