RIO has an actual lobbyist as part of the group and is using political connections to get meetings/wheel and deal. They also have a member who works at Gatehouse and used that connection to meet with Reid and her staff. I assume Walney was easy because Seema lives there.

Reid promised Walney Oaks. Somehow, they were taken totally out of the equation. And, those final scenarios did not include most of Crossfield.

I don't see them changing it now, but the School Board could if they wanted to do so. I don't think they will.

I still wonder if Kyle McDaniel and Melanie Meren will join together at the last minute to strike some sort of deal with everyone else to swap Crossfield and Fox Mill. They both seem pretty adamant about putting Crossfield at Skyview and keeping Fox Mill out.

Why would they do this when it would piss off so many people?

Seema lives in one of the nicer SFH areas zoned to Bull Run-Liberty-Centreville that was repeatedly moved to Westfield under almost all the scenarios.

She designated an apartment building to be moved out of her MS and HS and kept the rest of the Bull Run split feeder going to Liberty/Centreville.

No one has been able to figure out why Walney Oaks is being treated like VIPs.

When you’re willing to spend many millions on a school that doesn’t need to be built, as is Frisch, you’re also willing to play fast and loose with boundaries. He does not care about kids or education. He tried to bolt the School Board as soon as he could for a seat in the state legislature, but he lost.

Split feeders should be a very low priority.

As everyone but the SB can see, the capacities don't line up. Stone can't be the sole feeder to Westfield. It makes no sense.

Not every split feeder situation is equal. Some are kinda OK and some are awful.

Imbalanced split feeders (90% of kids coming from 1 MS, 10% from another) are the worst.

The only split feeder that is OK is the one that benefits my family.

What about the split feeder they created at Brookfield where only the poor kids are segregated out and sent away from their friends to Stone MS--a middle school much farther away than Franklin OR Rocky Run?

I met with Seema last summer during the Comprehensive Boundary review and I can tell you aren’t missing anything. She tried to relate to me because her kid moved schools to go to AAP. I had to explain to her that was a choice she made vs the one being forced upon me by FCPS. Everyone should set their party affiliations aside to vote her out of office next time she’s up for reelection.

So her kid went to AAP at Rocky Run? I think that's the center for Liberty MS.

McDaniel already said he will not bring forth any amendments to the final scenario as he knows how much work and due diligence FCPS and the consultants have put into it…his words from his call last week not mine. Meren has not been publicly specific about not moving Fox Mill except apparently in a few emails to people on this board. She will at best make a statement and abstain from voting.

There is no rationale otherwise for the decisions they are making. The new Brookfield split feeder is literally like they looked at the map and tried to figure out who to move based on which neighborhoods had the least political/economic power.

Never in other rezonings have they let individual neighborhoods dictate where their kids are going to go to school.

Public sentiment is always a part of any boundary review including the comprehensive one that just finished a few months ago.

I agree with this. What happened in previous rezonings was the SB member of that area was greatly deferred to. Since she is part of the Reid loving "in" group, she probably personally dictated the last two scenarios. She probably decided on that Brookfield split including Walney Oaks--maybe she didn't realize WO had gotten a special deal from someone else. That's why the map had to be pulled down and edited. She personally decided to move that one apartment area out of Centreville. The other SB members probably don't even know the specifics of where the apartments are, where the SFHes are.

Does a better job of balancing the enrollments at Oakton and South Lakes.

Gets rid of some of the longest commutes to a high school in FCPS.

Does not start to recreate the conditions that led a prior School Board to move kids into South Lakes in 2008.

Relieves overcrowding at Oakton at a time when substantial residential growth is expected closer to OHS.

Keeps families already mostly at an AP school at an AP school.

The path of least resistance is to move Fox Mill but objectively moving Crossfield to Skyview makes more sense. But we have a School Board and superintendent who regularly cater to the loudest voices with the most money.

That’s exactly what they just did with Madison and Marshall. It created a ridiculous attendance island. They didn’t care because it shut up Town of Vienna officials and gave people who wanted to bolt Marshall what they wanted.

The numbers involved were much smaller, but moving wealthier families to wealthier schools has the same effect as moving poorer families to poorer schools.
