So message to murderous regimes out there: America is for sale. Go ahead and mess with our citizens and residents. As long as we're making money off you, it's okay.

For the sake of accuracy, Khashoggi was neither.

He had a green card.

What is your source?

CNN's Nic Robertson.

Trump himself said he had a green card today. Gheesh.

“This took place in Turkey, and to the best of our knowledge, Khashoggi is not a United States citizen, he’s a permanent resident,” the president said. “

Permanent resident = green card

Ooooh! Trump himself! Do you always take his word as gospel?

Out of the kindness of my heart, here's what your friend Nic Robertson said:

"He moved to the United States, applied for a green card[i] and wrote for the Washington Post, despite his fears of what could happen to him."

I'm the twit who told you here on DCUM that Turkey has recordings of his death - way before WP broke the news, so whatever.

That's hilarious - all that happened here is proof the Sauds can be brutal people, even to their own. Holding a green card does not make him American; it makes him a Saud with a green card. He chose to go back to Turkey and go into the Saud embassy. He knew the risks.

Now blame the victim even applies to the crime of murder!

Well done

You can blame the Saud murderers if you choose. Truth is this happened in the Saud Embassy in Turkey, planned by the Sauds and probably aided by Turkey. He went there to get his divorce papers so he could marry his Turkish fiancé. Sucks but that was his choice to go and do so.

He didn't have a green card.

The more pertinent question is: why does the US think it can hold KSA accountable for what it does with its citizens in a third country? For what ANY country does with its citizens anywhere? In what way is the US a party to these events? In other words, what is a good response to the Saudis saying - what's it to you? I know Halloween is coming but the global policeman costume has been fraying at the seams for quite some time, and it seems no one is particularly frightened.

Depending on which court you can get to, some US courts would say that khashoggi is guaranteed US constitutional protections, despite not being a us citizen. Absurd, but true.

On what grounds?

Are you serious? The US can legally take any number of steps in response. The Global Magnitsky Act requires the US government to investigate and if the Saudi government is found complicit, to enact sanctions. It is unbelievable how protective some posters here of the Saudi government.

Does it require to investigate or does it allow to investigate?

I'm not at all protective of Saudis - what do I care? I'm simply mocking the hypocrisy inherent in the US pretending that human rights matter.

The investigation is required once it has been requested by Congress, which it has been. The US is hypocritical about lots of things. That’s hardly a revelation or a reason to coddle the Saudis.

Did you guys know that our government trains Saudis to fly sophisticated fighter jets? Why would we give such training and military know how to a country that murders its citizens? It would be like us training the N. Koreans. I don't get it. Why does the US treat the Saudis so well?
