Why Such Snobbery Against State Universities on These Fora?

It seems to be from this. http://www.wealthx.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/Wealth-X_UHNW-Alumni-Report_2017-2.pdf (Someone is probably going to call me a moronic DCUM reader if this was already posted.). It looks like they have a proprietary database with "known" high worth individuals, perhaps from Fortune and other public sources, and then they extrapolate from there.

I imagine the income information isn't coming directly from the universities.

Perhaps, but this forum is more obviously littered with comments from people who are rude and mean. I wonder if this is reflective on this area, the times, or a function of everything being posted anonymously in this forum.

When the practical costs of expressing conservative opinions is high on social media and view point diversity is snuffed out constantly by shouting "XXX is not up for debate" in the name of preserving the "dignity/identity" of some "protected group", the discussion moves onto the anonymous and niche sites where people get nastier and more virulent.

There is not a lot between Columbia, Brown, and Chicago for prestige. I'd say:

Columbia
Chicago / Brown
Georgetown
UVA

American

American is the outlier, so I added a bit of space.

Unless you want your kid indoctrinated with leftist BS, and feel guilty about their European heritage and destroy your summer by lecturing you on the cisgendered patriarchy, I would avoid Columbia, Brown and Georgetown ( go to Notre Dame, it is better) like a plague.

Shouldn’t you be reading up on the latest Alex Jones conspiracy?

This is the Poster who asked about ranking...thankfully our family is already left, embrace all cultures and religions, and kids are multicultural (only I am European descent. Other half is not ). Notre Dame is a tad too Catholic for us (although I am catholic). DC is more agnostic-although baptized.

Yes, but a lot of threads progress to ad hominem attacks right off the bat.

They only list billionaires. You think you could be a billionaire and be anonymous in america?
How do you think Fortune magazine or Forbes compiled their billionaire list every year?

It may not be 100% accurate, but it's accurate enough for the discussion on this forum.

No, I just checked. Georgetown is now $72 and UVA is $32 in-state; however, UVA was only $23K when DC started there three years ago so if you do go to UVA be sure to lock in the rate (you are allowed to do so on the paperwork - I don't remember if there is a fee or not, but be sure to check the box). All the publics universities in VA are jumping in price. William & Mary is now a whopping $37K. I believe the Commonwealth of Virginia passed a law that allowed parents to lock in at a stated rate year 1 and that tuition sticks with you all four years but could be wrong. We also didn't pay for the $3K a year health plan because DC is on our horrendous ACA plan. This year our entire tuition bill for her is $8K, $7500 of which is a direct unsubsidized loan (we are a donut hole family) because DC moved off campus and is doing her own cooking. No car. No sorority. No other fancy stuff. It is doable but you have to pay attention, which we do because we have three going thru the Virginia universities at the same time.

Ugh, only now am I realizing this is an old thread reactivated. I wish a red warning light would pop up when people reactivate old threads.

If cost weren't an issue who in their right mind would want to attend a university where 70-80% of the students are from one state? With all of the emphasis on diversity I would think that would be an obvious and disqualifying shortcoming.

It would all depend on the quality of the faculty and programs. I couldn't care less where the students come from.

I don’t even know where to begin with this one.

William & Mary locks tuition for 4 years for in-state students. UVA has an optional guaranteed tuition plan. https://sfs.virginia.edu/guarantee

Anonymous wrote:Blame this on U.S. News rankings. You have to go down to #21 before you get to a public university, Cal-Berkely.
And then maybe only 3 or 4 in the top 30.
Some people who are asking about "prestige" really are motivated by that factor. I agree it isn't a good way to choose a college, but certain names do impress employers and graduate programs more.

But that only happens for a small amount of positions in the job market. And once you are 1-2 years out, they could care less what school you went to.

Graduate school plays a bigger part. I much rather go to a state for BA/BS and go to a better graduate. Less money, less pressure. More fun

VA is increasing tuition across the board 5% this coming year. Locked in, sure. But you have to get that lock.

What colleges should I avoid to stay far away from people like you?
