Why Such Snobbery Against State Universities on These Fora?

+1. I went to UC Berkeley and feel that it's very well respected in DC in general (and on this board).

Parents don't need to come here to ask opinions on UMD, UVA, and Virginia Tech. You can find plenty of people who went there in your own circles and among your kids' friends. That doesn't mean they aren't respected, just that nobody needs to ask about them vs. smaller schools on this board.

No, I just checked. Georgetown is now $72 and UVA is $32 in-state; however, UVA was only $23K when DC started there three years ago so if you do go to UVA be sure to lock in the rate (you are allowed to do so on the paperwork - I don't remember if there is a fee or not, but be sure to check the box). All the publics universities in VA are jumping in price. William & Mary is now a whopping $37K. I believe the Commonwealth of Virginia passed a law that allowed parents to lock in at a stated rate year 1 and that tuition sticks with you all four years but could be wrong. We also didn't pay for the $3K a year health plan because DC is on our horrendous ACA plan. This year our entire tuition bill for her is $8K, $7500 of which is a direct unsubsidized loan (we are a donut hole family) because DC moved off campus and is doing her own cooking. No car. No sorority. No other fancy stuff. It is doable but you have to pay attention, which we do because we have three going thru the Virginia universities at the same time.

William & Mary locks tuition for 4 years for in-state students. UVA has an optional guaranteed tuition plan. https://sfs.virginia.edu/guarantee

VA is increasing tuition across the board 5% this coming year. Locked in, sure. But you have to get that lock.

Sure, W&M and UVA will get their money one way or another. This is just an option to make it more predictable.

Thanks for posting. I think we are locked but am calling now to make sure.

Talk is cheap; look at where kids are actually applying and getting accepted. Spoiler alert Arlington parents, most of your kids aren't getting into an Ivy...

state schools would be better if they had more european style controls. very low cost but 60% of the student body would not be allowed and shunted off elsewhere.

I don't know about UVA and I don't live around DCMV. However, I'm concerned about the recent direction that some public universities have taken at the hands of some unscrupulous state governments. In one state in particular, funding has been cut for humanities programs, and the governments have begun interfering with the way the schools are run. They are dismantling existing boards and reappointing members in an effort to change the direction of schools in such a way that I believe violates academic autonomy and integrity. Obviously this is a different question than prestige per se, but it is something to consider.

No one is really against them in general OP. It's just that they are common and most people go to them. People prefer things that are harder to get into and more obscure/exclusive/VIP

Thank you to the previous poster for that Arlington high school acceptances link. Ouch, it's tough out there. Schools such as JHU, W&L, University of Richmond looking very difficult now.

Do you have any idea what kind of GPA and test scores it takes to get into UCLA, Berkeley, UVA, William & Mary and now even Virginia Tech?
