Did it ever occur to you that neither one is exactly a rocket scientist? Hardly worthy of much respect.

And our president Mr. Obama.

Oh, please. The New York Times will refer to the president as "Mr." in the course of an article. So will liberal NPR.

I say "BowWow." After the platitudes, unfortunately there's just no there there. And ethically, she's a bit of Marion Barry in a skirt.

I also say that Mayor Tony Williams was the Best. Washington. Mayor. Ever.

I wish that he would return to public life.

$180 per year? For a Superintendent/Chancellor????? That's what building principals make! Wasn't Kaya making much more--$280+?

What's with the low salary? I thought the $400+ sounded a bit high but $180?????

Wilson will make a base salary of $280K in DC. http://dc.gov/release/mayor-bowser-announces-antwan-wilson-dcps-chancellor

To clarify about Wilson's $400k salary in Oakland: According to transparentcalifornia.com, Wilson received a compensation package worth $400K in 2015. The package included salary ($293,835.95), "other pay" ($9,600.00), and benefits ($96,660.61). Now, take home pay just shy of $300K is still a lot, but I just wanted to get the real numbers on here.

There is a more interesting conversation to be had about why his salary jumped a whopping 30% from 2014 to 2015 (search for "Antwan Wilson" in the transparentcalifornia.com database and you'll find two salary records). This seems particularly high when you consider the tense negotiating that when into getting a 14% raise for teachers in 2015. http://www.eastbayexpress.com/SevenDays/archives/2015/06/04/oakland-teachers-approve-new-contract-with-salary-increases-class-size-reductions

My friends in the Bay Area were shocked and irate about that contrast. I guess the guy wanted to leave town soon, and was able to dupe Bowser.

In one of his interviews he said he wasn't looking and Browser call him up.

Does anyone think that the chancellor search was a true 'equal opportunity' search? Much of the opposition to Michelle Rhee stemmed not from her decisions and policies but rather from the view publicly expressed even by some DC public officials that as an Asian-American woman she did not "look like DCPS." Bowser was not going to rock that boat.

True, Bowser probably learned that lesson.

In DC local politics, racism pays off.

We need to ask the French Academy if they were consulted and approved the move...

Wrong. Her decisions were disastrous to our inbound ES. How do you come in and pull the Spanish language classes that were offered three times a week; tinker with the successful Montessori component; place 6-8 graders in a building designed for elementary children; call it a STEM school without the S-T- or E, and not think that the few IB parents with options would not jump ship and run. Her race had nothing to do with her disastrous policies. It was not about race, it was about her incompetence. And, I'm not sure this new guy will be in better.

What polices have she enacted to make you think she is imitating the late Marion Barry. One day, you will have to give up on your fixation of that dead man.

BS!

The opposition to Rhee was that she didn't listen and created turmoil in the schools. It was devastating to have your child's school publicly turned inside out when her mass firings came out of nowhere. Teachers were escorted from the building by armed officers as if they were terrorists. Many of those educators were awesome for our kids. It was unnecessary, disorganized chaos. Worse, she lied and said the firings were 'cuts' due to budget constraints. Then she suddenly 'found' enough money--millions--to hire tons of new teachers and the turnover hasn't stopped since.

The people of DC got together and voted Fenty out in order to make her go away. It wasn't a bunch of racist druggies and thugs who did that. It was intelligent, thinking, civic-minded citizens who were tired of her nonsense that got her out of town.

DCPS has gotten rid of black Superintendents (when they were called that) who did much less than Rhee.

Just quit with the foolishness.

Agreed!!!!! Top-notch principal, smart, an earned Doctorate. She will probably be the de facto Chancellor. Could this have been a case of sexism?

I give this guy one or two years, tops. Dr. Alexander should have been a top contender but probably intimidated the heck out of Bowser. She doesn't play games like Bowser does. When he goes, she'll be next, assuming she doesn't leave, frustrated, under his tenure.

And how long is his contract with Oakland that he's clearly breaking?

Chances are he wasnt that far from being fired, so probably he was let go easily.

The Bay Area media wasn't too kind to him for the last year.

Is there any chance that Antwan will be pulled as Chancellor because the Council is looking into his selection process? http://www.washingtoncitypaper.com/news/loose-lips/article/20845560/washington-teachers-union-head-asks-council-to-censure-mayor

I don't really have an opinion on whether he'd make a good Chancellor or not, but I am very disappointed that Mayor Bowser did not go through the proper vetting process through the selection panel. It really has an impact on parent participation when you sit on these things (I did not for this one) and your participation means nothing. Even though I would be interested in participating in many of these DCPS lead roundtables/panels, I choose not to because I know my voice will not be heard. Not a great way to run the government.
