My cleaning lady stole my engagement ring (and other jewelry) - what to do?

The cleaning person really took advantage of my Dad at a time when he was very vulnerable. And, the sentimental loss was pretty huge. (also, imagine that the cleaning person had been recommended by someone at his church.)
When my Dad got the insurance money, he split it among us three kids. The only stipulation on what we did with it was "please don't just pay bills." "Buy something that will be a remembrance of your Mom."
I bought a lovely pearl necklace and matching pearl/diamond earrings.
They will always be very special.

That's very sweet. I'm glad you used it to buy something that would remind you of her.

Alright, so what happened when you asked her about the missing box of jewelry, OP?

I am guessing the cleaning lady said "No, I haven't seen it but I will keep an eye out for it. Have you checked little Larla and little Larlo's room? I often find your vibrator in there, I guess they think it's a "toy"...."

Np. Last night My 2 year old went into my room for chapstick. Then she went to brush her teeth. After teeth I noticed she was holding both my rings (which were in the nightstand with the chapstick). Those easily could have slipped down the drain . Cleaning lady was here yesterday. It would have been easy to blame/suspect her.

My five year old hid something small and valuable in the folds of a Christmas tablecloth. We had long since given up when it reappeared.

Years ago a neighbor asked me if my housekeeper had a day available to work at her house. I said sure and our housekeeper started working for her. A few months later the neighbor went on vacation and when she came back she told me she was sure the housekeeper had stolen some jewelry of hers while they were gone. She swore that she had looked all over the house and that the housekeeper was a thief. I told her the housekeeper had worked for us for years and I would never believe this. I told her she needed to look again and if she still couldn't find the jewelry, she should just ask the housekeeper about it. Weeks went by and I heard nothing more. Then I saw the neighbor at a PTA meeting and asked her about it. Surprise! She found the jewelry -- she had hidden it in a different place before leaving on vacation. She'd just forgotten about that because she'd been a little tipsy after coming home from book club. What an idiot.

I had a similar experience. I refused to share a housekeeper reference with her ever again.

When I was pre-school age, I "put away" my brother's sandals. My parents never found them, and it's been 45 years!

OP here. My cleaning lady encouraged me to file a police report and check my cameras (she is aware of them, but does not know that we don't have one in our master).

No luck finding it so far.

Unless she's incredibly brazen it seems unlikely that she took it then. What do you think, OP?

It was the cousin
