My cleaning lady stole my engagement ring (and other jewelry) - what to do?

Any update, OP?

Losing things and blaming others is an early sign of Alzheimers.

ugh, this is my DH. But he's been like this for a while. Usually phone chargers, but also his keys, wallet, papers, anything really. Convinced he put them X, and that one of us definitely moved it. I find it somewhere fairly obvious and he still claims that one of the kids did it.

Unlikely. OP automatically blamed the hired help because there was no other possible explanation (despite the many that were offered here). Whether she has or has not found the jewelry, she doesn't sound like the type who would take responsibility and own up, admit that she was wrong and apologize to the housekeeper for impugning her honesty. OP has video surveillance footage of her bedroom door but can't be bothered to review that footage to see if she sees anyone carrying anything as large as this jewelry box out of her bedroom, but can be absolutely positive that the only person it could be is a trusted employee of three years.

OP doesn't have that much integrity.

Agree. Just admit it OP. You made a mistake. We won't hold it against you.

No luck finding it so far.

So your housekeeper knew about the cameras, and probably believed there were cameras in the bedroom, too. Yet, you still believed she too kind the items? I think you need to look a bit deeper at those close to you, such as spouse, cousin or child. I recently read a blurb about a McLean man being arrested for shoplifting. 50 years old (give or take). But he had drug paraphernalia on him when he was arrested, which leads me to believe he shoplifted to support his drug habit.

When I was in high school, there was a spate of car break-ins, in which radar detectors were stolen. Several months later, the mother of a teenage boy found the detectors under his bed. The family was wealthy, but if the kid had a drug habit he needed to get his money elsewhere.

Wow, I'm glad I hadn't seen this thread before looking at my cleaner's backpack, or posting my own thread about it. All the naysayers in this thread were already well-represented as I suppressed my instincts and suspicions.
