Classic 80s/90s meals

Lipton Noodle Packets. Oh, yeah. It was lighter than Chicken Tonight. And by "lighter" I am not referring to fat/calories. I am referring to how much it weighed. Chicken Tonight came in a glass jar, and I was doing my shopping at the Singles Safeway in Georgetown, stuffing my backpack with groceries, then walking uphill back to campus.

How could I have forgotten wine coolers?

As far as "fancy" food, I think every generation has their version of fancy.

I still make shepherd's pie from time to time. DS loves it, meat and potatoes with gravy in one dish.

Which brings me to beef stew, or pot roast. I still make those too.

When I think of the eighties and nineties, I think of how ubiquitous quiche, all things balsamic, pesto, goat cheese, and flourless chocolate cake became.

Ok but some of us were not 26 and going to restaurants and ordering balsamic food in 1992. We were being fed casseroles by our moms!

LOL, I was actually older than that. I was already a mom cooking for my kids at that time, and we had a lot of balsamic stuff and pesto, as well as the old classics of family meals. The point is that most of the classic meals mentioned as being 80s and 90s food were already around in the 60s and 70s. My mom fed me Spaghetti-Os w/ meatballs way back when I was a kid.

I'm the Crystal Lite poster from a few pages back...thought of another drink...Canfield's Diet Chocolate Fudge Soda. I believe now it would induce vomiting, but I'd have my mom buy cases over break and I'd haul it back to school.

And, Bartles and Jaymes (note spelling) wasn't in my fridge as much as California Coolers, the original/gateway drink circa 1985 for me. We'd even buy "family-sized" 2 liter (?) bottles of Ca. Coolers and load up our fridge.

Off-campus parties served Milwaukee's Best (AKA Milwaukee's Worst AKA The Beast) in kegs.

Worst was buying a BOTTLE of Boone's Farm and having that be my drink for the night...right out of the bottle. Classy!

Weird that I remember more beverages than food in the 80's/90s. Or not, given that the hardest thing I drink now is very strong coffee!

More 70s, but carried over into the 80s...ever have Russian Tea? Your mom likely made it and gave it out at Christmas. This is a homemade instant tea mix with Tang ('anyone?), cinnamon, sugar...basically hot sugar water.

In college I ate a lot of Lipton Noodles and Sauce. My favorite was the chicken and broccoli one.

The Friendly's watermelon roll with seeds lol...

The last time I had Goldschlagger my friend threw up in my purse. I never had Goldschlagger again. I still can't see gold flecks without heaving a little.

Last time I drank Goldsschlagger ended with me and a bunch of other girls in the kitchen of the restaurant/bar weighing ourselves on the meat scale. #keepitclassy

How about blackened chicken, washed down with a Clearly Canadian, and a Viennetta for dessert. Save the leftovers to make a wrap the next day. And don't forget the sundried tomatoes. Very 1994!

My mom is Italian so we never had casseroles or any jello salads. Used to complain about all the pasta and salad, fresh fruit was dessert, never had fast food. We were just poor... I'm pretty liberal with junk food with my kids because when I left home I literally ate fast food non stop for two years. Remember the BK chicken sandwich, the meat plank was the forerunner to the nugget, it did not even try to emulate real chicken. That was my number one poison.

When my brother and I were older and latchkey kids, I think we ate hundreds of bagel pizzas, and steak-ums

and

hot air popped corn and does anyone remember those blue cans of Planter's cheese balls. Man, they were delicious.

Why do I feel like going to get a bottle of Goldsschlagger for the weekend? In my town it was Jagermeister, does anyone still drink that who is not a biker or heavy metal drummer? I think I answered my own question, does heavy metal exist outside of the 80's?

YES! I did that all the time in college - Strawberry Hill flavor was my favorite, but I also liked the blue one. Blue wine!! Gives me a headache just thinking about it.

California Cooler the gateway drug for Sutter Home White Zinfandel. Went really well with those TGIF potato skins.
