Arlington has asked Virginia to rename Jefferson Davis Highway

I am from MD and have no dog in this fight, but it is very insulting for all these transplants to move to VA and not respect the culture of the natives. Whatever happened to tolerance and respecting people who are different from you?

Jefferson Davis fought for the right to enslave the ancestors of many of the "native" Virginians. Many "native" Virginians also believe that the name of the highway should be changed.

Jefferson Davis = treason. Pure and simple.

Are your really comparing Nazi ethnic cleansing to the American civil war?

You know what I think is hilarious?
I lived in the “Jefferson Davis” part of Alexandria for 40 years.
We always called it “Rte 1” or “Richmond Highway.”
We NEVER referred to it as Jefferson Davis highway.

This seems to be much ado about nothing.

Yes, changed it to George Washington Highway, he only advocated that whites and blacks could not live together and for blacks to be removed from US borders and colonized in their own territory. Similar to putting Native Americans on a reservation.

Yeah your free to wonder around on a small plot of land where your very existence is dependent on your "Mother Country". Sound kind of similar?

Some native Virginians probably do think the name should be changed, but by and large this is a kerfuffle created almost entirely by PC police white transplant liberals.

I've lived in this southern shithole for 15+ years. I've paid my taxes and now have a voice in what happens here in good 'ole Virginny. No confederate flags and no highways named for Confederate losers.

That's exactly what the segregationists used to say. It's those liberal northerners coming in here creating division when everyone was happy with the way things were. They claimed the Negroes liked segregation as much as the white people.

You have a lot of work ahead of you just to remove the Davis tributes let alone all the CSA tributes.

Here's a list of David tributes for you to work on - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_memorials_to_Jefferson_Davis

Liberal idiocy.

Idiocy? Bullshit. Street signs get replaced all the time, it's not some "great expense." Most street signs get replaced roughly every 10 years regardless of name changes because they get weathered, lose reflectivity, get damaged, stolen, whatever.

And suddenly you want to help poor citizens when you didn't give a shit about them before the sign thing came up? Typical right wing hypocrite. People like you only care about the cost of things, but cannot understand the value of anything.

Again, do you understand that people who have very little don't pay these things much attention because they are too busy trying to survive? Y'all need more to do.

And God forbid the working class folks have any pride in their state history. They need to be indoctrinated with the social justice Warriors' mantra 24/7.

Union soldiers who signed up to fight in the Civil War were also "working class folks" - they were farmers, laborers, factory workers, et cetera. As such, the Confederacy is in no way unique to or a symbol of working class folks. So spare the bullshit about working class folks.

Yes and northern states are free to celebrate the union's soldiers. Why would southern states celebrate the contributions of the north's soldiers and vice versa?

Because southerners are proud to be Americans, and those soldiers kept America together.

Whoa there Hoss, you got that TOTALLY BACKASSWARD! Southerners LEFT the United States and TORE IT APART. Did you hit your head and forget about that whole "secession" thing?

I was speaking of those Northern Soldiers. Why would a patriotic southerner not appreciate that in the end they are Americans because of the North?

Southerners are part of this great nation called the United States of America because of the North.

Whatever happened to tolerating and respecting the culture and values of the 150 years that FOLLOWED the civil war? Why should all of that take a back seat just so that a bunch of backward racists can continue to live out a fantasy of how life was when blacks were slaves and were not considered fully human?

America, the country, and its values and culture have existed for nearly 240 years. Why should all of that take a back seat for the disastrous and destructive 4 years that the Confederacy existed?

Did you cry this loud when National Airport got renamed Reagan National Airport and all the money had to be spent changing signs and metro stops?

I don't believe that was done to make a bunch of people feel better about themselves.

Sure it was - Republicans. Regardless, the cost is just the same. And cost seems to be what you object to.

And here we have an example of the narrow focus of liberalism. What I object to is spending money on feel-good gestures, while simultaneously and shamelessly taking away the scholarships of poor black inner-city students. What makes more sense? Removing street signs and renaming them because - racism - or giving poor children the ability of getting out of schools that don't serve them and into environments where learning is prized, and they can thrive, grow, and break the poverty cycle?

The removal of street signs and statues helps rich white people feel good about themselves, but does nothing to help those individuals. It amounts to a shameless head pat.

Well I object to "feel good" gestures like trying to repeal Obamacare, as I don't think that doesn't actually helps anyone, I object to "feel good" measures prohibiting gay marriage or allowing caterers to deny service to gays as that DEFINITELY doesn't help anyone, I object to "feel good" measures like propping up unsustainable trillion-dollar war policies in the middle east because that sure hasn't helped anyone, I object to "feel good" measures like slashing taxes and government budgets because it sure doesn't help anyone to have crumbling infrastructure, polluted air and water, contaminated food and unsafe products, I object to "feel good" measures like "states rights" because a state jurisdictional boundary can't stop polluted air from blowing across the border, and can't stop the flow of pollution in rivers from the upstream state (laws of physics and common sense of "shit flows downhill" that you right wingers seem to think can be trumped by idiotic ideology)... The ENTIRE GOP/Tea Party platform is about "shameless head pats."

Are those feel-good measures or are they real concerns based on the 1st Amendment and to keep the nation from going bankrupt under programs that don't work?

I think you should be more concerned about the billions just given to Mexico and central America in this huge Ryan nightmare budget to 'foster good relations', including $39 million to Mexico under the Economic Support Fund designed to promote 'a civil and just society.' WTF?
