Catholic Confirmed, but non-believer

Anonymous wrote:My DH and I are both raising our kids Catholic. Church weekly, catholic elementary school, continuing education on the journey to confirmation. But I'm not sure I want them to be confirmed. They don't believe in God, let alone Catholic doctrine.

For both my DH and me, we were confirmed despite not believing in God much or at all.

When you were confirmed, did you believe, or were you going through the motions to please someone else or to check off some required obligation you felt? Would you want your kids to be confirmed if they don't believe at that age?

Thanks

OP, I wouldn't want my kids confirmed in those circumstances. If they want to, they can always do so later

Then why expose your kids to something you feel so negatively about?

I will let them make their own choice when the time comes, just as I did even though I was raised Catholic.

so you want them to have your exact experience? You want your children to be taught that a book full of inaccuracies, according to your own assessment, has great value and that they should be taught to believe concepts that insult your intelligence.

If you were taught s a child that certain ethnic groups were evil, would you want your children to be taught that so they could reject it on their own later? would you want them to be taught that girls are not as good as boys?

There are ways for your kids to learn about religion without being taught to believe things that you yourself have rejected as an adult. Please consider a unitarian church or an ethical society.

Please stop being so crazy and rabid. Really, everyone has their reasons, I don't need rabid judgement.

Hopefully you'll read the reasoning above again and see that it's not "rabid judgement" - it's a reasonable alternative. Then, maybe you'll consider that "rabid judgement" applies to your reaction.

90,000 cases of sexual abuse in 2003 in America's public schools. Acknowledgement that a lot of school districts cover up or discourage complaints. And yet, here we are, 12 years later, and neither George Bush or Barack Obama has shut down the nation's public school system. And I bet you voted for one of them, you sick evil person.

You could have left the United States and moved to another country. But you stayed here, knowing this abuse occurs year in and year out. You are a sick, hypocritical onlooker.

I acknowledged the abuse in the public system - at least twice now if you bothered to read. I mentioned the school in Mo Co that covered up a scandal.

There are pedophiles everywhere - from businesses to schools.

However, if your brain functioned you'd understand my point - that churches represent some higher entity, some benevolent being that protects its adherents. What protection were these children given? Did you read the other article I posted - about sending these pedophiles to poor villages? just pass them along in the name of God

FWIW, I'm no onlooker, honey bunny. ex-Catholic here who stopped years ago
Catholic school product, too . . .

I'm not the goddamn hypocrite.

NP here. Oh gawd, the rabid ex-Catholic poster again. She's nuts and violently belligerent. I'm not even Carholic and I'm sick of having to watch her. Wish she'd get a life and move on.

If you're not a Catholic (or ex), what credible experiences can you share with the OP?

I'd say you're the one who needs to get a life and move on.

As outsiders we have better perspective on this wackadoodle. She derails every thread on Catholicism with her own obsessions and pathological hatreds. She's a public nuisance, so she's everybody's problem.

Is that the royal "we" or do you have insider info on who is posting here?

a public nuisance? lol

How is sharing an opinion supported by evidence a "problem?" Furthermore, as a former Catholic, who attended Catholic school and who received all of the sacraments, I think I have THE RIGHT to chime in b/c I understand the church. Someone who's NOT Catholic can't speak to these rituals designed my man to brainwash the masses.

And who are these "outsiders" chiming in? more non-Catholics? What kind of perspective can you have if you don't understand the church? You can't recite a damn prayer from memory. You haven't been around nuns and priests - or had any in your family, right? (I have.)

As an "outsider," you should stay OUT of the discussion b/c you have nothing to offer.

And finally, OP is a non-believer, and her kids don't believe. Why go through the odd rituals of becoming a "member" of the church if you don't believe in God? What's the goddamn point?

This poster is just as conflicted as OP - perhaps feeling even more guilt, which is method #1 in brainwashing. love the fact s/he recognizes hypocrisy, finds that these stories insult his/her intelligence, and says religion is a business! yet STILL attends church on a regular basis

enough to make any person's head spin

But I'm the nutty one.

I struggle with the Catholic thing too. I have reached the conclusion that the bible is a book of inaccuracies and that the thought of a heaven and hell simply insults my intelligence. And takes her children, who, if they take after her, would perpetuate this behavior for another generation. This is a big score for the church, which is thus funded by people who think it's a sham.

Classic! I had to wipe the spittle off my screen and it looks like you've posted multiple times on this thread alone. Love your contention that nobody can comment on Catholicusm except Haterz like you--that's so typical of how you think and your generally warped logic. You didn't forget to toss in some extraneous expletives. All in all, one gets the image of your head exploding. Thanks for making my day, you freak!

Are you blind? Catholics have a reputation for being blue collar and also being from ethnicities that were shunned by the WASP establishment. If you want to social climb, maybe join the Episcopal church, and a high-church Episcopal church at that. (Don't get me wrong, I love the Episcopal Church for its progressive values, including ordaining gay priests). Also, did you miss all the threads here about how many Christians are afraid to talk about their religion at work, precisely because of bigots like you?

Or are you so blinded by hate that you can no longer see reality?

Methinks we need a nickname for this ex-Catholic-turned-bigoted-freak. We have Groundhog, the poster who pops up everywhere right before Christmas to remind everyone that Dec 25 wasn't the actual birthdate (as if nobody already knew that and complete with hilariously unlikely examples from Greek mythology).

Why should this awful nutjob go without a name, poor thing?

Here's my proposed nickname: Scorpion. For her nasty tongue and constant spewing of venom. Although it doesn't capture the characteristic that she's on here 24/7. Other suggestions?

Nope. I suggested one of these but not the other.
