This person is correct. The continent IS America. Or North America (there are two schools of thought about whether America is one continent or two). Anyway, the point is that United States is not America. Only people from the United States think that they are America.

Frankly, let's just call the United States "World". We're really the only IMPORTANT people in the World anyway, right?

I don't understand how this thread was hijacked, but since I'm new to it I'll play along...

Our country's full name is the "United States of America," so around the world we are called "Americans." I can't think of any other term used by anyone internationally to describe a person from the U.S.A. besides "American."

Now, that's not to say that anyone from South, central or North America (meaning you, Canada!) cannot claim to be from the continent of America. BUT, they have other country names to differentiate themselves by (Canadian, Mexican, Colombian) whereas we only have "American" as a descriptor.

This is a linguistic, not a geographic, point.

I think it's bizarre when parents combine their names when naming their child. My little sister had a friend named Stevearetha (dad was Steve; mom was Aretha). Perhaps not the worst name ever, but certainly odd nonetheless.

And a friend's mom who was an ER nurse in MoCo years ago loves to tell a story about how the triage nurse agonized over calling out the next patient by name -- Shithede. (Apparently it was pronounced sha-theed ... but the nurse on duty pronounced it "head").
