OP here. I mentioned to the host wife that I could write her a check and she asked, "What for?" When I told her about her husband's email, she was mortified and clearly knew nothing about it. She said she would refuse to take any payment. I suspect her husband is in HOT water now.

Rule of Life...Don't invite people if you can't afford it.

OR say the club, whatever whatever is holding 4th of July event and tickets are such and such amount. We are thinking of going, do you guys want to join us? That way everyone knows up front there is an associated cost and no one is blindsided.
