I know a 5 year-old Penelope, a 6 year-old August and a 5 year-old Scarlett, so perhaps their parents are ahead of the trend! I met a 3 year-old Beckett this summer and know 40 year-old Emmetts and Griffins.

I just don't get why people would name their children such names... Jezebel is another one, or Saul i. e.

I also laugh when people try to use words/names in other languages when they have nothing to do with that culture. Just plain silly. Not mentioning they can't even spell it!

Well there you go. I have my future daughter's name picked out now: Berta. Guaranteed to be the only one!

I don't know. I was thinking of Matilda for my daughter but I've now met three of them! (But I'd spell it the French way, Mathilde.)

Matilda is Heath Ledger and Michelle Williams' daughter--I think that's what sparked the trend. But for the love of god do not think you are avoiding being trendy by giving it a clever French spelling that everyone's going to mispronounce. That's annoying in 8 million ways and a big hassle for your kid. If you like the sound of Matilda, go for it (with the spelling commonly used in the U.S.) and don't worry about the trendy factor. If you absolutely must use a non-phonetic French spelling, you should move to France. Or at least Canada.

Maybe s/he's Canadian, or from a French background. There are white people in this country with backgrounds other than Irish, you know!

I love, love, love the name Delilah, but unfortunately I just can't get past the biblical connotations (and we're not particularly religious).

Not to mention, my moral majority relatives would probably report me for child abuse.

Asher is already very popular around here.

I know a three-year-old Violet, two two-year-old Matildas, a three-year-old Asher, and a four-year-old Silas.

I have a really hard time believing you found two "classic" names that aren't in the top 1000.

Believe me, I share your intense dislike of nontraditional spellings, but my particular interest in Mathilde in personal. I've lived and worked in both France and Canada, and my family is French. I speak French, and the friend whose name inspired the choice is a French woman named Mathilde. I would in no way be using the French spelling in an effort to be unique or clever. In any case, it's off the table because DH doesn't love the name. He'd probably relent if I really pressed the issue, but both parents should at least be fond of the name they pick. Oh well. It preserves my ability to veto his choices of Cheyenne and Willow!

Is it only popular among Jewish people? We strongly considered it and were told (on DCUM) it would be weird to name our kid Asher if we are not Jewish. We are not religious but both raised Christian and celebrate Christmas in a secular way. I think the name is adorable and might still consider it for our second.

I think a lot of non-Jews are using it because they don't realize that it's a Jewish name. Or don't care. The only Asher I know well is Israeli but I've heard a lot of people saying how much they like.

Milo reminds me too much of that old movie where he was the dog and Otis was the cat. Or do I have the animals switched?

LOL! So true about Arlington. Snifflier than thou. I would guess Jack and Emma top the list there, even though those names are already into white trash mode.

I know 2 Violets, 2 August's, 2 Bennett's (one girl, one boy), a Sebastian and a Dashiell. I still really like the names though. I have met a few too many matildas to go with that one though.
