OP here--thanks for all the feedback. The results are really interesting and not all that similar to the Social Security list for DC, which is kind of what I suspected. For example, I knew Sophia and Jack were popular names but never would have realized they're as popular around here as this thread would indicate.

Again, thanks so much!

Did you really go through 8 pages of posts to compile this?

Ha! Good question but somehow I love that there's a project manager for this thread. (And I say that seriously!) So DC[UM]...

Wow, I never would have picked Asher as an up and coming name. I know about 6 Asher's ranging in age from 40 to age 4.

OP, would you really take DCUM responses into serious consideration when considering your child's name? Really? Are you going to live here forever? Your child? Wow.

Are you really as much of an uptight killjoy as your post suggests? Is your child, too? Really? Wow.

OP asked a simple Q about baby names. I'm sure she will take the responses VERY seriously, given we're talking about curing cancer here and all.

I am not sure they are. Jack hasn't been popular for us. We named firstborn "John" with nickname Jack. Both our grandfathers and 2 uncles were 'John'.

I lived in NW and now live in NOVA. My son is 5 and we've yet to encounter a single other Jack in his 4 years of preschool...first 3 preschool years in the city and the last one in close-in NOVA neighborhood. We also haven't run into any Jack's in any of the various summer camps or sports teams he's played on.

I keep wondering wth all these other 'jack' characters live.

In our preschool there is a class where 4/12 kids are either Sophie or Sophia! And every music class, camp, sports team we've been part of has had at least 2.

That durn giraffe started a trend! Argh!!!

We picked DS' name out of a book, and thought we were SO original and clever - only to find out it's rising like wildfire on the SS list, and at my first pp checkup my OB said "oh, I know 4 X's born in the past month"! How on earth did that happen? I've never met or heard of a single person with his name before. (At least it's not on the top 10 list, but I bet it will be in a couple years.) And, no, you can't know what it is b/c I don't want you to use it!

I am laughing at your last sentence. You can't stop anyone else from choosing the same name you did, and writing it or not writing it on a message board isn't going to make it more or less popular. Sigh.

First, check the Baby Wizard website. It can show you where a name is ranked in your state/region.
IMHO, if your number one priority in naming your kid is originality you are either bound to be disappointed (when there are 5 of them in his class because other parets were thinking the same thing) OR your kid will have a fugly/bizarre name. Just pick what you like.

LOL. Every time I meet an Olivia I think of the little piglet...

OP, I feel your pain. I spent a lot of time on both the SSA site and Baby Wizard (name voyager and her blog) to try to suss out trends. I wanted regular, real names that were not insanely popular.

One big strategy: stay away from any name that is similar to one that has exploded in popularity. For example, Avery shot up in popularity for girls after Ava was perceived as too common. Also look at movement on the list. Has anything rocketed up over the past few years? Avoid. Celebrity named their child that? Avoid.

I have two daughters with classic names (also family names for us). Neither is in the top 1000.

Good luck!

I know a 5 year-old Penelope, a 6 year-old August and a 5 year-old Scarlett, so perhaps their parents are ahead of the trend! I met a 3 year-old Beckett this summer and know 40 year-old Emmetts and Griffins.
