Most common (overused?) names among infants & toddlers in this area?

Hedwig and the Angry Inch!! Not a name to use, unless you want to beg the comparison.

I think that the fad right now is not to give family names, per se, but to use old fashion sounding names. Usually, the best place to start is with the family tree.

I had a great aunt named Shirley and I love that name, I would totally use it for a DD.

Hear the name Carter a lot -- and it's my last name so it seems odd to me.

It seems odd to most of us, especially since the three families I know with a son named Carter are staunchly conservative.

It feels to me like there's often this subtle (or sometimes not so subtle) air of superiority among those who pick family names for their kids--like parents who (gasp!) choose names they just happen to like are somehow beneath everyone else.

If you're lucky enough that grandma had a beautiful and (surprise!) suddenly trendy name, congratulations, but please don't look down on me for not naming my kid Bernice or Aloysius.

As a child of immigrants from a culture where this is not the norm, can someone explain this proliferation of "we used a family name?"
Does this mean there are a handful of names that just keep getting reused each generation (see Bushes)?
Are we talking Jr, III, IV?
Is it grandma/grandpa's name?
Or is it some random aunt's name that happened to be Isabelle and you are saying you used a "family name" to sound superior (ie I didn't pick it because it was trendy).

I think saying "i used a family name" means doing something like the Bushes. Just naming your kid after grandma is doing that, not "using a family name.". The latter sounds like you've got a bunch of names recycled.

I am the PP-- as an example, DS was named in the Jewish tradition for his grandmothers--same first letter. It also
happens to be DH's great grandfather's name. I never say "we used a family name." That sounds so pretentious! Why not just say, he's named after _______.". Much more meaningful anyway.

We used a very uncommon name and when people ask if it's a family name I say "it is now".

(I think I stole that from Calvin Trillin)

My grandmother Sophia feels the same way!! She hated her name so much her whole life that she goes by her middle name. She can't believe that it's one of the most popular names out there right now!

This cracked me up. We have a son named Carter and are as tree hugging, liberal, lefty as you can get.

Thanks for reposting, but Malia is no where near Maya, Mia, et al.

I haven't read the entire thread, but I find it hard to believe that many names are overused in this area. That list could fill 4 class rosters.

we are having a girl and the girls' compilation list is almost name-for-name the list we used to select our name. thankfully the one we picked isn't on the list, and it's like 240 on the SSA list.
