Hobby Lobby paid a living wage and provided wonderful health benefits to even part time workers, long before the living wage movement and obamacare were a thing, FYI

Wonderful health benefits that don't include access to birth control for women

Like I said, I don’t shop there…but it’s interesting that they were ahead of the curve in terms of paying a living wage (for moral reasons).

And ICYMI, Hobby Lobby employees do actually have access to birth control—all methods. The Supreme Court decision (while troubling) prompted an accommodation whereby the health insurance company provides direct access to the select items Hobby Lobby didn’t want a hand in providing (ie: Plan B, IUDs, etc.). So, practically speaking, their employees have access to all methods (and standard BC like the pill were never at issue, just the abortive methods, but the end result is those methods were in fact provided and covered).

Anyway…

I get why people are mad at Target, but all things considered, I think they are still better than Walmart, who is (these days, surprise!) better than Amazon. I don’t see a way to avoid all three so that’s my order of operations for finding items online. We try to buy what we can at Costco but it doesn’t cover everything or we can’t buy such huge amounts of it all.

I try to only shop at BIPOC-owned businesses.

What’s wrong with Hobby Lobby? I’ve never been to one.

About 10 or 15 years ago, health insurance companies were mandated to cover birth control. Hobby Lobby has religious owners and didn't want to offer BC to their female employees and took it to the Supreme Court. They won the right to exclude BC (some, all - not sure). I realize people can decide for themselves whether to work there or not, but I didn't like the precedent that was set.

Also for religious reasons, HL is closed on Sundays. I purposely threw my business to Michael's and JoAnn's over the years, because I didn't want to help keep a company in business that wasn't open all weekend, which is when I usually had time to shop.

I don't do a lot of crafting now, and my house is decorated, but when I need material or to have something framed, I try Michael's or a local shop first. HL does have good selection. Holiday paper plates in 20 designs. Dozens of "themed" aisles for home decor - beach, rustic, country, pink ballet, sports, and on and on with SO many items to choose from such as framed pictures, lamps, book shelves, decor items. HL has a large fabric selection, party theme items and every craft supply you could need. Want to decorate your front porch for a holiday? HL will have 50 or more things to choose from, whether Spring, RW&B, Fall, Christmas, etc. It's a clean store and their prices are affordable.

But I hate religion having influence on public policy and I like the convenience of being able to shop on Sunday. I don't hard boycott HL, but I throw 80% of my business in this area to their competitors.
You don't care that the employees of other stores you frequent have to work Sundays to accommodate your shopping habits? You boycott a store for "religious reasons" because they honor giving their employees Sunday off? You know, there was a time when the majority of retail stores were not open on Sundays.

There was a time when people thought the only religion was Christianity, and all sorts of policies reflected that narrow view

You won’t find anything for Hanukkah at HL

None. I shop wherever I want. Saying that I have not been to Target for at least 5 years, just because I didn’t need anything from there.

?

Not true. Google it.

Hobby Lobby absolutely sells Hanukkah decorations. They are seasonal items typically stocked in October and November. Like every other store on the planet, it isn’t typically a huge selection, but that tracks with the fact that Hanukkah is celebrated by a very small portion of Americans.

I still don't want to support a company who is willing to go to the Supreme Court to get exempted from providing birth control, and doing a work around so the insurance company hands the items to the employee directly. I don't want to shop companies where the owners need legislation in order to say they aren't violating their religious convictions by touching birth control.

And yes, people/groups who are actively against abortion, view most forms of the "standard" pill in this category because BC pills have a back up method of making the lining inhospitable to implantation, should an egg happen to slip through and get fertilized. There might be a pill version that doesn't thin the lining, but if they had their way, most brands of BC pills would go away.

One shop that I had unpleasant experience with the shop owner, I don’t go there anymore.

I also don’t go to Amazon fresh cause it’s not well stocked and I have alternatives that are equidistant.

I used to shop a lot at Target cause have 2 small ones within short distance, but then when I was deciding whether to subscribe to Target or Walmart delivery opted for Walmart for better prices and wider choice.

I had a negative experience with delta and have avoided flying it as much as possible for the past 16 years. Probably flew once during this period.

I have absolutely seen this. You're thinking of Halloween. They do not sell Halloween merchandise.

Okay.

But the lawsuit wasn’t actually about the BC pill. It was about Plan B, and long story short, HL employees do have access to Plan B covered directly through their insurance.

Nonetheless, I’ve never set foot in a HL store. And I’m pro-choice. I just think it’s interesting that some corporations have a more complicated and nuanced track record than most realize.

Again: paying a living wage before others did—and actually providing BC despite what most people believe. And, they do sell Hanukkah decor despite what many critics think.

I find all of this interesting. That’s all.

Hobby Lobby is conservative Christian right, and opposed to birth control. Nope.

So? It’s a store. They sell stuff. Buy it or don’t.

You are ridiculous PP

So the employees can make their point by going to work for the competition that doesn't even have health insurance.

Get out of town.

Back in 2023 they absolutely stopped carrying Hanukkah items and sent an email stating
The claim is true, but out of date: Hobby Lobby discontinued several of its seasonal product lines in 2022, including its Hanukkah line, citing business reasons.

In 2023, several news organizations confirmed that Hobby Lobby had stopped selling Hanukkah merchandise in its stores, a decision that drew criticism toward the chain at the time. The company claimed that the decision was made for business reasons and emphasized that other seasonal product lines were also cut.

“The decision on what to offer our customers are based on many factors, including customer interest and what sells well,” Hobby Lobby told Snopes in a statement last year “Our seasonal merchandise assortment carried at Hobby Lobby is constantly changing, and they evaluate it annually. Due to the need to find additional space for some of our stronger categories as well as our newer ones, the decision was made over the last couple of years to discontinue several seasonal product lines, including Mardi Gras, Halloween and Hanukkah.”

They must have reversed this decision because of public backlash and being called antisemitic.
