The specific kid I was thinking of played football at Harvard with a 1300, shortly before test optional began. One has to assume Duke is willing to go even lower for basketball players. The specific post to which I was responding said:
Given the number of very high stats kids turned away from these schools, and the number of recruited athletes who attend with much lower stats, to say that “only smart kids” attend, and to imply that the reason a very high stats kid can’t get in is that they aren’t smart, is offensive. Everyone understands that very high stats kids don’t get in because the schools are too small, and they care more about basketball/hockey/football than they do about maximizing the number of very smart kids that they educate. Which is fine, those are their values and that’s their choice. But don’t say the kids turned away aren’t smart. |
It's because they will do anything to make it including cheating. This is both the student and the parents. You can never trust people like this and just avoid them in your life. Remember not to marry someone like that too. |
Hard working and ambitious =/= striver Striver is more akin to a social climber. |
|
Wow. 11 pages in and we are still defining striver. I think there are a lot of defensive strivers posting here.
In some social circles, the stereotypical striver characteristics are admirable. In many, they are not. Believe it or not, it is possible to be extremely smart while also having a social life, people skills, and interests away from academia. So many people here act like any college kid who goes to parties and has fun is a slacker. Nope. They are actually better. Because they can maintain good grades AND have fun. Perhaps you should try it. Or stop insulting those who are capable of doing this. Just because they don't wear their intellect on their sleeves and they have fun doesn't make them dumb. |
+1 lots of folks on this thread seem to be oblivious to the fact that they and their DC’s are menaces. |
And a lot of other folks on this thread think their way of thinking is the only way to live and judge everyone else for it. Some of us don’t have daddy’s money or our skin color or gender to fall back on |
If your kid is “capable” of doing it then why do you care how anyone else does it? Your kid lives their life and let everyone live their life without your advice |
Not sure what any of those things have to do with being a douche. One can work hard and achieve without being one. Those who can’t get judged. But you do you. |
Your assessment of whether someone is a douche appears to be how much or how little they act like a white guy. You seem to enjoy judging people but don’t like being judged yourself |
Why are you making this racial? Lots of white strivers. Lots of non-white non-strivers. One can be a smart, over-achiever without being obnoxious about it. That's what this is all about. Work hard, participate in class, engage with professors, get good grades. Those are all good things. But when someone takes it to the extreme with sucking up, publicly advertising their grades and how smart they think they are, and having no interests but academics, it is annoying and those are people that many of us don't want to be around. Just chill out and act like you've been there before. Not that hard. It is all very simple. Unclear why some people are so defensive. |
Striver is a term on this forum for Asian people. Riff raff is a term on this forum for black people. |
Nope. I said above that the two biggest strivers I know are white men. There are a lot of Asian strivers, but there are many who aren't. And riff raff is a class related term, not a racial one. If anything, I think of it more in terms of "white trash." |
You’re being deliberately obtuse if you think striver on this board means anything other than Asians. |
And Karen is the term we use for white women like you who want to go around telling everyone else they’re living their life incorrectly |
NP: I'm Asian and I am offended by what you are saying. The other posters have made it very clear that though there are many Asian strivers, there are many strivers who are not Asian. You are making us look bad with your ignorance. |
