Option H is permanent and the old Wootton HS campus will be closed for good?

LOL This is Horizon Hill back in the 80s all over again, from the argument around property values to changing from being a walker to a bus rider. And guess what.. it turned out fine.

It’s fine as long as it’s somebody else losing the money. These people swallowed the loss and nobody cared.

MCPS is not in the real estate business, nor should it care about your property values.
Sorry.

Why shouldn’t they care? the property value goes down and so do the taxes.

MCPS doesn’t care because they will get what they ask for either way. But if your property value goes down because your school is worse someone else’s property value will go up because their school is better. The effect of all this on county revenue is pretty negligible.

Speaking of which, MoCo revenue is already down by a lot, and projected to decrease. So, it makes zero financial sense to have a brand new school a few miles away and fix Wootton, all while projected enrollment is expected to decrease.

Spoken from a true county perspective. Most people in Rockville are paying taxes to have amenities like schools close by. I think it's fine to force Potomac to go to Crown as they are likely fine with rolling around all day long anyway but picking up people from Rockville to go a whole town over. I think we can make room for them in RM and RHS. The ones that are already in Rockville proper.

Nah, I live in Rockville city and are paying Rockville taxes to allow Potomac residents to use the sidewalks and snow shoveled roads to get their kids to school in Rockville at my expense.

I mean you do know It’s Montgomery COUNTY public schools right? Asking because you seem confused about how this works. Pretty sure people who send their kids to school in Rockville aren’t sending them to “The city of Rockville Schools”. Also this isn’t just an MCPS thing. I went to school in another state and my high school was a city over even though it was under a 10 minute drive. This is just how it works sometimes-it’s not abnormal.

I’m not blaming Wootton parents but just saying, if they decline or fight against a brand new school offered to them in Option H, it’s not realistic to think a brand new Wootton is going to be built in its current location in next decade.

100% if any other Wootton parents are against this then don’t complain about the need for a new school. With what money? I’d much rather my child have to go an extra 5 minutes to a different school with all their peers that is safe and new than be in a mold infested unsafe building.

But it won’t just be with all of their peers. It will be with all of their peers and then eventually 1k kids from an entirely different cluster.

You are disgusting. You know very well that it's not 1000 new kids. And your kids peers will still be there. You only oppose this because you think the blacks and Hispanic kids will create trouble.

Most of these kids will be with their peers.

As a parent of students in a school rated 7-8, I was shocked to realize that kids were unconciously grouping themselves according the their academic performance and parents' SES. All our kids friends have similar test scores, and their parents have similar level of education.

A school rated 7-8 is entirely different than a school rated a 3.

You must be the OP of the rating thread. If you care so much that kids with poor background will be your kids peers then go to private.

I hope MCPS combines the two schools together to form Crown.

I think this adding 1000 kids is a rumor/misinterpretation of what was actually said at the meeting. Crown can hold about 2200 kids right now period. There is no funding now to build it out further. If the county decides they need more capacity in ten years maybe they build on the adjacent land and max out the 2700 seats. Good luck with finding the money and kids to fill anytime soon though.

I think that's one of the concerns parents have though.

At first most people in the Wootton area thought option H didn't sound bad.

But then the talk started about how more students from the Gaithersburg area, it was stated 1000, would be brought in and would likely result in a current Wootton feeder school getting squeezed out.

So even if this wouldn't be until the future, some families are looking at this from a long term perspective.

Then MCPS is continuously revising and changing things. I haven't been following things but to me these four new options came out of nowhere. So who's to say they won't come out with new options that expands on some of the current ones or are more along the lines of what people are saying the goals are. And if you're currently in one of the regions that get bussed to Wootton, who's to say that your area won't get selected to get rezoned to another school to make room for the students from the Gaithersburg area?

In some of the other threads you see how some people comment how they didn't expect things to be on the table like they are. ie some of the areas currently in the QO area didn't expect to go to not get assigned to Crown HS and also get assigned to Gaithersburg HS instead. And I'm guessing a lot of families who live near Wootton didn't think that closing the current Wootton building was an option that MCPS would consider.

So I'd be a little bit careful of sitting back and thinking that your area would be unaffected by any changes. Unless you are okay with whatever possibilities there may be. ie it's not an issue to you if your area gets rezoned to QO, RM or maybe your area gets split off to the new Crown school while they rest of the Wootton area stays with Wootton, which is okay if it's not an issue to you. But it's an issue for some parents and why they're raising concerns.

Don't speak for everyone at Wootton - If Fields Rd and Rosemont go in to Crown with Option H, Dufief most likely goes out to QO. And if options A, B, C, D were chosen then Dufief goes to Crown with the Gaithersburg HS kids.

Dufief loses no matter what option is chosen.

But they are saying option H gives them at least some chance of staying with Wootton. They are betting on Cold Spring going to RM rather than them going to QO.

This.

MCPS did what they thought was right when it came to Cabin Branch. Property values did not get affected. Go see the zillow values. Not everyone who buys a home in 20878 and 20850 care about the schools. They care about commute to DC. Your property value will be just fine and stable. Gaithersburg property values will rise if new builds pop up and option H is chosen.

Why do you care if Gaithersburg property values go up? Yours would still remain stable.

They can bet on it all day long. They were supposed to be rezoned to QO when it opened but they fought that and stayed with Wootton.

Do you really believe Cold Spring will be rezoned and not them when they are slated to move out to Crown in all 4 options A-D?

If option H is gone because all this hoopla the Fallsmead parents put up, Dufief can say bye to Wootton and go to Crown.

Anonymous
To your question option H gives them a chance so they should be making their voices heard. Options A-D are worse for Dufief.
Anonymous
It's funny how Wootton parents are against each other with option H. I want to see who prevails.

They should build an affordable housing project at the old Wootton site.

Amazing how they would have the money for that but not to fix the school. interesting how that works.
