Expect this to be walked back in exchange for concessions by India; or maybe the big 4 get a waiver if the administration gets an ownership stake

10% shares in Google, Meta, Tesla, and Oracle? That would be more socialist than FDR so no way that happens.

Please read the notice carefully, exceptions have been written into the proclamation, “any company or individual can be exempted on the discretion of DHS Secretary”. Let the bribes begin.

People who perpetuate their caste system and are hostile towards gays and lesbians, and don’t even like dogs, don’t participate in or understand our culture, don’t really make the best neighbors.

And a lot of the foreign doctors, due to racism endemic in their cultures, are prejudiced against African Americans and do not treat them well.

Chaos on an Emirates flight at SFO yesterday. H1B holders scrambled to get off the plane because they were concerned about getting stuck outside the country or having to pay $100K to reenter the U.S.

Why do you all think that America is a leader in anything?? We have been able to attract top global talent for years! We *used to* want to be leaders in every industry?

You all are happy to give away the competitive edge everywhere?

Make it make sense.

hmm, H1B was created in 1990.

tell me how US created Silicon Valley and excelled in high tech in the 60's and 70's and 80's without cheap disposable temporary workers?

are you really that naive or are you a Big tech bot?

You are the one who has a totally naive and simplistic view. The tech ecosystem today is totally different from the Silicon Valley of the 60s, 70s, and 80s. You think changing one thing is going to bring everything back to the way it was? There are so many factors I don't even know where to start. ... But for starters, the major universities like Stanford and MIT were key players back then and with the Trump administration $hitting all over higher education, how is this going to work.

You change tax policy.

Then that will bring back labs like Bell Labs Xerox Parc etc

That is the crux.

It's nothing to do with the country but all to do with money and power - the T way.

26% of doctors practicing in the United States are foreign-born. Why don’t US medical schools open up more spots so that more Americans can become doctors?

To preserve wages. That's quite literally the reason

Yeah, AMA is famous for this to limit number of doctors. Also, I think we are the only country in the world requiring a 4-year degree before Med School; this also reduces the numbers big time.

My concern would be a further shift to L1/L2 visas to get around the $100,000 fee.

L1 are for intra-company transfers and there are no quota and no wage requirement, unlike with H1-Bs. In 2023 almost 80k L1 visas were issued.

The current cost is $1,700 and up to $4,500 if expedited. Thus is peanuts. The new $100,000 is in addition to the current $1,700. It is only for new H1B applicants and not current holders of the visa.

European countries with desirable passports are monetizing their immigration system. Meanwhile we are giving it away for free. The left constantly asks why we can't be more like Europe. In this circumstance, I think they are right. We should restrict access and sell it to wealthy buyers, and then use that money to improve our country.

When was the last time one of those countries created a whole new industry? Billion-dollar companies?

PP here. Sorry, on re-read my question sounds snarky. I didn’t mean it that way. I actually want to understand. I am trying to understand your view since this seems to be something you have thought about.

+1 to the first part. The US and India just restarted trade talks. This is just leverage.
