APS Math instruction

So just fyi— there is a Facebook group for dhms parents that would be much more appropriate than this for getting dhms specific information.

In general, the dhms math dept is incredibly bad. Like so bad that half the teachers get fired every year. Some of the math teachers are just blatantly bad people— calling the kids racial slurs, putting failing grades into the grade book when the kid didn’t actually fail, telling them to F off or using other curse words, calling them curse words. They get suspended for a couple of days/weeks, but there’s no one to replace them in the middle of the year. The school is otherwise great.

What? I’ve heard DHMS is great, how does that jibe?

The math department is very bad. Like seriously shockingly bad. As the pp above said— I’ve heard similar stories. All the teachers for other departments are really great though. Principal is excellent. Just really crappy math teachers except for a few gems.

Weird. I'm very engaged in the school and know tons of parents. I've only heard of one terrible math teacher who has since left.

I doubt the PPs actually have kids at the school.

Yes. Look at the math dept. I have a seventh grader, a now ninth grader, and a now eleventh grader. Only one of my kids past teachers is still there. Only three of the math teachers aren’t new this year. The math coach is new this year. Lots of turn over.

What data? This is only the second year of MAP testing.

It's certainly something to watch and Duran should address any issues raised but I wouldn't draw any huge conclusions after comparing just two years of data.

And SOL scores have been increasing each year since the pandemic.

Correction: Scores have artificially increased because they lowered the bar for a passing score.

Apparently you don’t know her that well. The math coach taught my kid math at DHMS.

It's in the OP of this thread for goodness sakes. And no, SOL scores are not going up. At best they're flat and well down from pre-pandemic scores. APS seems just to be waiting for those old scores to roll off the reports so they can pretend the new lower scores are terrific.
