So IXL serves as instruction and practice sheets? They don't do anything on paper? |
For Algebra at DHMS:
-Envision hardbound textbook at home -A lot of the material does seem to come from TPT but it’s good quality -Students take guided notes together as class and work through several problems together, all taught by the teacher -Kids have choice board with variety of assignments - with a partner, on paper, on IXL or other app -Kids take quizzes on paper - they are marked up, graded, and returned -Kids take tests on iPad but have to show their work on paper. Work paper is returned if requested for test corrections with answer key. -Kids have to do test corrections to be eligible for test retake -Kids use IXL, etc for homework, not instruction We are 6 for 6 math classes on teacher-led instruction, not IXL or videos. |
This is great. Thanks! |
To clarify - the answer key for tests isn't physically handed out but it is available on canvas to go back and see the correct answer.

So just fyi— there is a Facebook group for dhms parents that would be much more appropriate than this for getting dhms specific information. In general, the dhms math dept is incredibly bad. Like so bad that half the teachers get fired every year. Some of the math teachers are just blatantly bad people— calling the kids racial slurs, putting failing grades into the grade book when the kid didn’t actually fail, telling them to F off or using other curse words, calling them curse words. They get suspended for a couple of days/weeks, but there’s no one to replace them in the middle of the year. The school is otherwise great. |
Lol. I've never seen a choice board outside of elementary school--that's ridiculous. My kid has never had a teachers paying teachers worksheet or quiz on paper. Like not a single on paper math assignment since the pandemic. Everything is on the iPad. At most students are required to take a photo of scratch paper with their iPad and submit it, but it's never reviewed and nothing has ever been marked up and returned. |
Are you at DHMS? I admit the choice board surprised me — and I assumed 99% of kids chose the computer /ipad option. |
What? I’ve heard DHMS is great, how does that jibe? |
Do you mean the DHMS PTA or something else? I can’t find it. |
The math department is very bad. Like seriously shockingly bad. As the pp above said— I’ve heard similar stories. All the teachers for other departments are really great though. Principal is excellent. Just really crappy math teachers except for a few gems. |
Yes, the pta group. You can ask more specific questions and get actual people responding. |
I've heard similar stories about Swanson's math department. Lots of learning by watching videos on Canvas. |
Math scores are falling across the whole district so a deficit in math instruction isn't limited to one school. |
Fake news |
The choice board gives kids options for work to do throughout the week. I like it. |
