APS Math instruction

34.5% to 31.5%? Not sure I'd call that "quite a bit", but OK.

What did other school districts see in the same time frame? Did anything change in the test approach that may have affected scores? It's a new test so it has to be taken with a grain of salt. Duran should absolutely address any issues raised but I wouldn't draw any huge conclusions after comparing just two years of data.

That said, I do fully support APS purchasing a curriculum if there is one available that meets the wonky VA standards. (VA DOE should do this IMO)

Wait. You said scores are increasing.

Don’t SOLs start in 4th grade? Couldn’t APS just choose a quality curriculum, knowing that they’d cover the material needed, even if it isn’t “in order”?

Solid instruction from K-3 would produce better scores, no?

Or must certain topics be covered each quarter no matter what the teachers think is best?

I don't think everything is perfect, but it's also not the disaster narrative that some people are pushing. Certainly not the lies people are trying to spread about DHMS.

I think purchasing a good curriculum that meets VA standards would be great - if it exists.

I said SOL scores have been increasing, fckface.

I can repeat for you:
- APS SOL scores have been increasing each year since the pandemic.
- MAP testing is down a bit but it's only the second year with this new test so too soon to draw conclusions.
- Republicans are full of sht and make up lies about math departments and score fluffing.

Uhhh they just fired a DHMS math teacher. This week. Math instruction is not going great. Not for students or for teachers.

PP is right. They lowered the bar for a passing score on SOLs. I don’t think that’s a win at all.

MAP testing isn’t new. It’s new to APS. I wouldn’t be so dismissive.

I don't think you get it. The point is that you can't draw much of a conclusion based on only 2 years of data for this test within APS.

Which teacher?

Are you the PP who was pushing lies about the # of new math teachers?

No, I do get it. You mentioned that it’s a new test, and it’s not. It’s not like they need to work out some bugs.

I agree that more years of data will help draw conclusions.

How did APS compare with other districts across those two years?
How did teachers administer it year 1 vs. year 2?
Did the test algorithm change?
etc.

We shouldn't dismiss it completely but it's not really a full picture of student performance.

Look at the VDOE website. They state that proficiency scores were lowered. People aren’t making this up.

Decreasing scores are okay as long as neighboring districts are decreasing, too? Come on.

And it’s administered on an iPad. That doesn’t change.

It's new to APS. Don't be pedantic.

They may have to work out bugs for administering it - there may be discrepancies from one year to the next.
