To those deciding..my son attends St Andrews and loves it! He went to a Big 3 in the DMV and said he feels well prepared.
Some notes: Socially it's fantastic- he has friends from all over the world with a core group who are also from the US. Plenty of people from the DMV but more from the northeast and CA. They have something from freshmen akin to fraternities and sororities called academic families which really helps freshmen make friends with upperlassmen. The town is small (and incredible SAFE) but there are lots of restaurants and pubs and they go to Edinburgh which is 45 min by train. He studies only things he is interested in. This is not a liberal arts format. You go deep into one or two subjects like the British system. He travels cheaply all over Europe. He has been to France, Spain, Morocco, Amsterdam and Prague and he is just a sophomore. RE the above-mentioned kids dressed up for an event...I can tell the PP there are TONS of dress-up social events balls, societies, raves. People still dress up in the UK my son has two Tuxes and a suit and blazers, and he wears all of them. They also wear their red robes to university events aka Hogwarts. It is A FANTASTIC place for an adventurous independent kid who knows what he or she wants to study. |
Thank you for taking the time to tell about your son’s experience! This is super helpful! We are very familiar with the town, but visiting in the Summer robs you from the vibe and environment during school season. Thank you again!!! |
If you dont mind me asking: 1) What is your son studying? 2) Which other modules did he take in year 1? 3) Did he have any friends already at Sta or did he come in blind? 4) Which hall is he in? Is he on a std catered? How was that first year on his hall? |
I have similar questions as PP plus one more: Is your 2nd year currently at a dorm? Or did he move out to a flat with others? And if he did more, how tough was it to get a rental? |
Are you St Andrews bound kids depositing at any US school? |
Not sure if the JDP program at WM is counted here but if so, it’s about 50 kids from VA (I assume they count WM as the starting point). The program aims for only 25 kids total per year but it’s become extremely popular and the yield has doubled. Apparently they tried to tighten it up in 2024 to drop the number of kids back down to 25 and it didn’t work. |
No. The data from the OP is only covering US Students enrolled at a 4-yr program at St Andrews. The W&M kids are not counted in that data set. |
That’s a ton of money being tossed around. Bit surprised they didn’t try to expand to 100. |
St Andrews wont go for that as they are basically maxed out for housing. Let’s be honest, the interest in the Joint Degree comes mostly from Americans. The JDP program is skewed towards Americans with much fewer UK students. |
I posted this question & wanted to come back & say my daughter sent them an email & asked for extension which they granted to May 1. |
Same here. Thank you. |
Thank you for the information!
My son is in the same position and will decide between StA and William & Mary after an upcoming Williamsburg. It is a very tough decision! |
Most of the program participants are out of state and the costs are similar. The program requires dedicated staff and advisors at both schools. I suspect keeping it small helps with this. Also one of the draws is that the kids in the program do a class/activities together and become quite close. I think that is viewed as one of the program’s benefits as the kids go back and forth between the schools. FWIW, this doesn’t mean the kids in the program only hang out with each other. My kid has a separate group of WM friend and is rooming with hall mates in a flat at StA. |
The only StA’s graduate I’ve met is a wine steward. |
Sorry you live such a sad life. |
