How can we prepare our children for the coming storm?

This has veered off the path of the OP's original question. My advice for kids, education, civic duty, and vote when they are older. This is a rough transitory period for this nation but in the end a stronger society will emerge.

Maybe let go of the T20 college obsession? It may not wind up being a relevant question.

The number 1 source of brainwashing is church/religion. Attend, but apply those critical thinking skills liberally while attending, and definitely push that "cultivate flexibility" and "appreciate multiple sources and multiple points of view".

Most of the hardcore MAGA types believe Trump to be some kind of godsend because he pushed the Jesus button. That's a critical liability.

Do you know anything about how to do this?
You don't just "apply for dual citizenship with another country" for your children.

Most, if not all, civilized 1st world countries have rigid citizenship eligibility requirements that include having multiple years of residency within the country already under your belt. We're discussing a complex concept with people that thought it was wise to elect Trump and Biden so this could take a while.

The ignorance and arrogance I'm seeing here is breathtaking. "I'm just gonna apply for dual citizenship! I have monies for invest!"

Nobody said that. You guys are arguing with a concept that only exists in your own mind. Many countries offer citizenship if you can prove close family heritage OR you can also buy a citizenship with enough money.

You cannot "buy a citizenship" anywhere. Yes, there are ways to live in another country if you have enough money. But many of them, Portugal for example, are changing their rules because Americans have abused them. And countries do not "offer citizenship" based on heritage. You still must apply for it.

Like I said, ignorance and arrogance. As American as apple pie.

Oh ffs the original poster in this chain said they were applying for citizenship. No one thinks it happens without application. You're just embarrassed because you tried to call them out and they knew what they were talking about.

Not embarrassed in the slightest. I'm not the person who thought it was too hard to apply for easy-peasy heritage-based dual citizenship but is now planning to after two weeks of Trump.

Maybe man up?

Our fathers and grandfathers had to do this. This generation is soft.

My grandfather fought actual Nazis. He came home with a purple heart for his service. How dare you compare his sacrifice with anything that Trump would ever do. He told me that after what he went through our family would never have to prove our worth ever again. Go to hell.

Meh, I think we have entered the "feet of clay" period. I guess it was bound to happen. I guess I didn't anticipate how willingly some Americans would participate. I would advise my kids to be flexible realizing that they may not raise their kids here.

My grandfather also fought the Nazis. My dad fought in Vietnam. Men fight wars. We’ve raised a couple generations of softies.

Elon and Trump are actual Nazis. Your children have an opportunity to fight against them and take back their country.

There is no intelligent leadership now. Know anyone who fought in WW1? What a waste of human life. In track to repeat. Trump has no idea. He'll treat soldiers like toy soldiers.

Sigh. "How can we prepare our children for the coming storm" is now a literal question...

Good luck, everyone...

Spain was giving it away with any $500,000 plus real estate purchase not too long ago. Could still be in effect.

Do you think raising your kids in Spain will really set them ahead and make their lives this much better? Europe has its own problems. And they still have monarchies and old titles FFS. And the migrant flow isn't ebbing any time soon. I've never lived there for any extended period of time, I may be wrong, it must be paradise.. But for those of you who had never lived there outside of extended vacations or student exchange or staying with family, you should probably take a sabbatical and try this first. I know some families who relocated for a year or two and even with adults not having to work like they did in the USA, they aren't pursuing citizenships, they are back and their kids are back in the US schools.

Oh, I just reread your post - you are correct, Italy doesn't "offer citizenship" based on heritage.

It recognizes your citizenship. If you can prove that you have an unbroken line of citizenship from an ancestor who was an Italian citizen and who never renounced their citizenship before the next ancestor in line reached the age of majority - you can apply for them to recognize your citizenship. There are some complexities - it isn't always straightforward, and a lot depends on what year your ancestor got married and so on since citizenship laws changed between 1865 and today, both in the US and in Italy.

So it isn't easy. But for some people, we can get our Italian citizenship recognized.

For starters, maybe learning about the world shouldn't be something we resort to in a crisis. Part of why we're in this mess is because of a poorly educated population.

I obviously have no idea so help me out here!

You should get back to reality.

You know... like free lunches in the school cafeteria. That was reality.

Then you grew it to free breakfast and dinner. NOPE. Stop abusing the goodwill of the tax payers.

What sort of bitter grinch begrudges children meals? You don't believe in a working wage, and the Trump tariffs are going to raise the already astronomically-high price of food, so what's the alternative?

When people don't want to have kids, you're why. And it's not a question of "goodwill of the tax-payers"; you have no compunction about letting billionaires have tax breaks "the taxpayers" won't ever see or benefit from. Just a 2% increase on the top 5% of earners would make sure all kids get fed without your mid-level self suffering a cent, but that's not what you vote for either.
