UGA does have relatively low acceptance rates for a state school and have much higher yield rates and retention rates compared to lower acceptance privates. Their yield rate is 40% for a school with no ED which is quite high. Tulane is only 48% and takes a huge number ED. Wake Forest is only 37%. Their retention and graduation rate is also quite high. |

No, but I have enough awareness and perspective to realize that most Americans are happy to just send their kids in state, they don’t obsess over rankings, and for most people USNWR is the only ranking they are likely aware of, or at least the first place they would look if trying to figure out if a school is “good” or not. This place is a bubble. The hyper-fixation/obsession with how prestigious a school is is a bubble. DC is a bubble. Most people are not like this. Sorry. |

I've long believed UMD is a T40 school (at least) and thankfully, that's finally being borne out by USNWR. I think they'll get there this year or next.
I feel like they should basically be where UF is. |

Bottom line is that again we get a real ranking by 10 million students every year vs imaginary rankings by magazines. We get the collective actions by 10 millions students. That's just a fact. That's just a fact. |

I am confused…so what is this so called ranking of which you speak based on applications? Considering you have kids submitting 20+ applications to schools, what does what your write tell us about anything? Does that mean the schools that get the most applications are the best? |

I said it's reflected in the combination of acceptance rate + yield rate + cohort quality, and additionally retention rate + graduation rate. For example very top schools like MIT, Harvard, Stanford, Princeton get extremely low acceptance rate + very high yield rate + very top cohort quality + very high retention and graduation rate. This the result of collective actions by all the students actually taking actions. This is the real true ranking in the real world. |

Okay so what is UGA’s rank on this list? Oh that’s right, you don’t know, because it isn’t a real ranking. This is all we were talking about. “Normal” people don’t obsess like this, they just say “oh I wonder if that school is good” and if they consult any ranking it’s probably USNWR. And it’s just one data point in a much bigger decision and they move on. |

USNews have some entries far from the reality. For example schools like Rutgers. You are free to just blindly go with USNews. Many don't, and at the end every year, we have the actual in the real world how all the students ranked the schools collectively. |

It's not exact science and it's stupid to number them 1 2 3 4 etc in the first place. However you can easily see what actually happened in the real world every year - the combination of acceptance rate + yield rate + cohort quality, and additionally retention rate + graduation rate. |
