Nope, if that's the case USG would get relatively low acceptance rate with full of high stat kids. That's not the case... sorry. 
Normal Americans pay good attention to what they pay especially something as big as college. 
While USNWR is one of the most influential references, it's still a reference.

Every year, 10 million students collectively rank schools, apply, and commit. That is the real ranking.
We get the ground truth every year and it's reflected in the combination of acceptance rate + yield rate + cohort quality, and additionally retention rate + graduation rate.

No, but I have enough awareness and perspective to realize that most Americans are happy to just send their kids in state, they don’t obsess over rankings, and for most people USNWR is the only ranking they are likely aware of, or at least the first place they would look if trying to figure out if a school is “good” or not.

I am confused…so what is this so called ranking of which you speak based on applications?

Considering you have kids submitting 20+ applications to schools, what does what your write tell us about anything?

For example very top schools like MIT, Harvard, Stanford, Princeton get extremely low acceptance rate + very high yield rate + very top cohort quality + very high retention and graduation rate.  This the result of collective actions by all the students actually taking actions.  This is the real true ranking in the real world.

Oh that’s right, you don’t know, because it isn’t a real ranking. This is all we were talking about. “Normal” people don’t obsess like this, they just say “oh I wonder if that school is good” and if they consult any ranking it’s probably USNWR. And it’s just one data point in a much bigger decision and they move on.
