are you buying your kid an ED school tee or sweatshirt before admissions are out?

Totally agree. It’s like buying Harvard merch just because you visited Harvard Square. Weird.

My kid accepted his ED offer and is super happy, so Amazon next day to the rescue!

We made that mistake so I’m going to say don’t buy it! It’ll go in the trash.

Funny bc this is also NOT weird.
And clearly the merchandisers at places like H&M, PacSun, Tilly’s, Urban Outfitters all agree bc there are always a handful of college sweatshirts from various colleges that they carry in their cold-weather lines both in store and online….including Harvard,

And people literally do exactly what you suggest is “weird” All the time. Tourists do, in fact, but Harvard swag when they visit the area! You’re very out of touch.

This is last year? Or already heard from ED school this year?

I have a T-Shirt hidden in my closet. If she gets in, we'll give it to her. If not, we'll donate it. I know her (she's my daughter) and she won't wear it out of the house until everyone knows where they are headed to college. But I think it could be a really nice celebratory moment.

I know it happens. I’m not denying that.

I’m saying I think it’s weird.

My expensive SUV is useful. Functional. And used daily. You're buying fabric that was produced via chemicals and sweatshops just to shove it in a dresser.

So bizarre. Your suv was produced that way too. Where dies the upholstery come from? Also, you are a major contributor to global warming, and that's cool, but buying a sweatshirt isn't?

It’s not “accepting an ED offer”. If you apply ED, you’re agreeing to go if accepted.

I know a mom who bought a cookie cake with Penn congrats on it, did not get ED, and the mom still posted the cookie cake on social media, though it was blacked out in a fit of rage.

How not to do it.

I totally did not realize this was a thing—when my kid got in ED I was like “why would you have a shirt from there? You don’t go there yet.” My sister bought something as an early holiday present and she had it in a few days. But I was once again reminded that I’m oblivious to a lot of this stuff.

I would not, like a PP, I'm a bit superstitious and it's bad karma. I told my DD not to fall in love with any school till the admission was in hand.

She ended up at Baylor. Her admission decision was online via the portal - it was a really nice little video. But that was followed up in a day or two with a swag box. It had a tee shirt, mug, yard sign, green and gold popcorn, socks, M&Ms, and assorted decals, and details on next steps, line camp, orientation, etc.

So, there's plenty of time to buy swag. I would hold off because if the ED does not work out, you would have the hassle of returning it.

I do wonder how much all this promotional stuff is driving up college costs. I went to Amherst in the 90s and never got so much as a free sticker.

The most telling answer here is that everyone is judging whether a kid should or should not have swag before acceptance. Guess what - it's what the KID wants, not what you want. If they want swag beforehand and you can afford it, buy it for them. If they want swag and you truly can't afford it, that is understandable. But if your kid wants it then don't skip it because you think it's wasteful, superstitious or weird. It's not about you, it's about your kid wanting to express themselves.

I think Amherst sends a tee and a sticker, not a big package. With their endowment, they can swing it.
