I think some connections become more valuable over time. I was a middle-class kid at an Ivy, most of my friends were from similar backgrounds. When we graduated, none of us had much in the way of connections. 20 years later, though, many of my friends are now in very impressive roles across a range of fields. Now the fact that we're connected with each other is actually super useful. |
| My son went to an ivy and had a lot of poor friends in his study groups |
+1 |
Not my kid's experience on equestrian. We are FA fam, and some kids are very rich in equestrian. The (likely because who knows really) richest kid was the nicest and most down to earth. Another middle class kid was the most clique-ish. Of my kid's general friend group, she is on the poorer end (we ar MC). That group has LMC, MC, UMC, well off, rich and super rich. All nice kids, and a great group of friends. |
Ivy? Was your kid recruited? My kid rides a lot and wants to know more about the process at the 3 Iviees w/teams and some competitive club teams. |
Interesting chart. I have a DC at Dartmouth and I do see an incredible amount of wealth there. |
| The wealth on this graph at Brown doesn't surprise me. My family friend's son is at Brown. Lots of uber wealthy kids and many kids or nieces/nephews of celebrities. The rich/adjacent celebrity kids not surprisingly hang out together and form cliques based on where they holiday and live or have their second homes. |
Yeah---Sting's kids went there, Stephanopoulos' kid, Elon Musk, Chris Brown/Gwyneth Paltrow's son, Catherine zeta Jones/Michael Douglas daughter, Emma Watson, etc. But, there are lots of kids tat Brown on complete full rides/low incomes. It's just like all the other Ivies/top 15 (really T20) nowadays. The barbell is happening since tuition is so unaffordable for donut hole/middle class that are full pay. The Ivies give the most aid for the poor/disadvantaged. It's free if your HHI is $100k or below. Penn, Harvard, Dartmouth, Yale, etc. Exactly the same. |
Yes read earlier in this thread…..rich ppl hang out with each other. It’s easier that way. —— Your first tier is top boarding schools. Tier down is certain other private/prep schools (along with the kids of CEO /hedge fund/PE/banker parents bc kids want jobs) Further down is public high school but full pay Below that is financial aid kids of any amount. Bottom is FGLI/questbridge etc. Read about real experiences on Reddit if you doubt it. One of the most popular icebreakers for new student orientation/dorms is “where do you summer” or where did you vacation post-graduation. Followed by country club geography. —— |
I think the assumption is that they didn't earn it. The whole legacy preference thing reinforces that idea. |
As long as you are physically fit, you can be hot. |
Yeah, this totally sounds like something that really happened. |
BWAHAHAHA!!!!! |
my DC is a wrestler - exact same situation! all ivy athletes - with exception of football and basketball - needed to spend an inordinate amt of money training club teams private lessons etc etc - majority of these athletes come from wealth |
Yeah because that sort of personality is exactly the sort of personality that builds long lasting relationships. WTF? Go to school, get a good job. If you work hard and succeed, the connections start to materialize. If you attempt to ride your connections, you should understand that everyone has a nephew or cousin's kid that they would prefer to help out over you. There is no substitute for competence and competence is where the connections form. |
