False. My kids are there now. They have no clue who is wealthy. Students ARE careful not to be flashy. OP is basing this entire thread on what she thinks three private school kids said to her DS. Talk about stirring the pot and you all fell for it!

And at this point, and certainly going forward with the elimination of legacy admissions, how many rich white kids will there really be? I was on an Ivy campus last week and it was very diverse. Even the white kids didn't look like the New England preps of the old days.

Agree, though there are plenty of rich white non-legacies to choose from. My white kids who are not legacies but are brilliant and are rich are at two different ivies, not from New England prep either. Their white friends at theirs or different ivies are not legacies either. Legacies are already much more rare at these schools. They do have hispanic and asian legacy friends. We make 600k household though we are quiet about it and do not have a second home or fancy cars, and are easily full pay. Sure there are some uber rich whites at ivies who are flashy about it but that is not common. There are also rich asians, poor whites, rich africans ...on and on. Racial diversity and socioeconomic diversity is about as maxed as it can be at these schools, now that SFFA case is done. The Ivies all brag about over half on financial aid: some are truly poor with parents paying $0, and others upper middle class making 200k who manage to get a little need-based aid. The ivies also brag about over 50% non-white. These schools are at their goals of racial and SES diversity and got there in the last 3-4 cycles. They will easily be able to stay there. There is not only a complete lack of white-rich-majority at these schools, there is neither a white nor a rich majority taken separately! Anyone who has kids at ivies currently understands this empirically from being on campus at move-in, family weekends, poster sessions etc.

TL;DR: Any parent who is looking at ivies, do not fall for the drama of these posts! ALL kinds are at ivies; the common denominator is smart, ambitious, and able to juggle a lot of things. That kid from any background will fit well in at ivies.

no offense but your level is rich is not the elite level. not closet. 600k is not law partner level, and those people are only bumping up to elite level. It's not in same world and finance, tech money.

2 kids at different Ivies. They are friends with people across varied economic backgrounds. Some full FA, some wealthy. They are not friends with the uber wealthy. By their report- the super rich kids and the famous family kids all hang around with each other. And, of course kids know who is rich and who is not. Rich kids go to expensive places for dinner, go on vacation, have expensive things. My kids are neither FA nor wealthy. Kids are friends and it doesn’t matter who is who, but of course kids know who has $$.

Top 1% is ~800K/year and they constitute about 10 of the students at IVY+
The majority of students come from households in the top 10% or $180K+
Only about 1/3 come from households earning less than 120K

If your family is between 120K and 250K that is like the middle third.

You can cry about it or you can adapt.

I’m a teacher, and guess what I’ve noticed after all these years??? Kids tend to group with those they have things in common with. Indian kids always sit together and group together. Even when I’ve noticed other kids try to invite them to sit with them, etc. My point is, who cares? Why are you focused on white people of a particular background. Really way more telling of you than them.

I have a Freshmen at an Ivy (no hook, no legacy) and he has a big mix of friends already—club teammates from a ton of different backgrounds (from one that footed the bill for all new gear to those he buys food on road trips), kids he met at orientation (from struggling to wealthy), kid that is 5th generation, dorm roommate -different ethnicity UMC, public hs Mc kids, a Dutch and Swedish friend. He’s never in his room and it runs the gamut. He hasn’t come home to visit and won’t until Thanksgiving.

It’s what you make of it.

Tier down is certain other private/prep schools (along with the kids of CEO /hedge fund/PE/banker parents bc kids want jobs)
Further down is public high school but full pay
Below that is financial aid kids of any amount.
Bottom is FGLI/questbridge etc.

One of the most popular icebreakers for new student orientation/dorms is “where do you summer” or where did you vacation post-graduation. Followed by country club geography.

Neither of my different-ivy kids were asked “where do you summer”. And they are full pay white kids. No one asks things like this unless you have zero self-awareness and reflection skills. They are not athletes and their conversations revolve around what courses are you taking and who do you read in your free time(authors,newspapers etc), what level of math did you complete in high school and what professors do you have for fall

+1 everyone is very 'normal'. I think the Ivies don't attract the really 'flashy' wealth anyways. The kids very much downplay it if they have it and you wouldn't know by how 'normal' they act and appear. Maybe it's an 'old $' thing.

JFK Jr really sought the kid that did not come from wealth. He loved hanging out with him. He didn't like the hangers-ons. He wanted authenticity. The kid had capital because he could surf really well (on a school trip to the RI beaches) and was a bit of a daredevil. JFK Jr wanted to be cool like him. IT was a really interesting read from the kid's point of view. He also talks about going back for Xmas to Jackie O''s NYC apartment with John. Nothing fazed John and didn't care about the wealth thing---more 'the people'.

Nobody said they were, dope. They said he sought out the ordinary (non-wealth crowd) while there. One of his good friends came from nothing—met him at a sponsored trip to the beach - California kid who could surf .
