Safety in schools

— assign at least one dedicated to each HS plus at least one additional to float in the cluster
— let principals decide whether to waive the current restrictions on cEOs walking the halls, engaging proactively with students etc. In practice, some principals may already be doing this.

Yes. This would be a good start. Right now, the capacity they are allowed to act in is worthless. It’s like having a scarecrow in the building.

Based on comments and discussion among parents, consensus is something needs to happen to improve security in schools. What is the next step?

Vote out the incumbent school board members who have proved to be deaf, dumb and blind to the issue.

Why can't something like this be decided by referendum? There are so many things that this board does, or supports, that just aren't in line with what the majority of regular people want.

You gotta go even further back in the process. Enough qualified candidates do not run. FIND them first. The incumbents continue being incumbents because no one is running against them or the ones that are, sound even more extreme.

The board also is abysmal at holding MCSP staff accountable. Brian Hull, who oversees the department that handles safety and security, is a golden boy of the board, despite the abysmal state of safety and security. And despite the fact that his department was responsible for the failures of chief safety officer Ed Clarke who was fired in June of last year for failing to keep up with state-mandated reporting on serious incidents, and the embarrassing hiring and departure of his replacement, chief Pam Wheeler-Taylor, who quit in November once she realized the mess she'd gotten herself into.

Brian Hull, and his subordinate Dana Edwards who directly oversees security and safety, should be getting flamed in board meetings regularly for this mess.

Need to also go above MCPS and look at the state level. For example, there's a proposal right now by Maryland Democrats to drop penalties to students who commit crimes and disruptive behavior at the schools. Parents need to wake up and be more aware about the bills that our politicians are passing.

Why don’t you list teachers and staff among stakeholders?

Seems fine. I mean it's not the schools fault that kids get drunk in the bathrooms or go off campus at lunch to jack cars.

It's not like MCPD enforces laws at schools anyway. They act if it's some magical zone where laws don't apply.

Agree, MCPS is not a law enforcement agency. MCPD needs to start doing their job.

Well for starters, MCPD should be allowed to do what's needed to keep schools safe (inside and out) but MoCo politicians think they can do whatever they want including kicking them out of the school buildings.

What's the bill number?

Did any of the bills brought to the BOE by the Legislative team have to do with safety in schools and in school bathrooms?
