Sort of. They got millions of dollars from a settlement JUUL, the vape maker, did with the state of Maryland. That settlement money is going to fund vape detection sensors in bathrooms and some more security assistants to tackle the problem. But they didn’t go into details beyond talking about the money.

Maybe they could spend some money on educating kids sometime? Kids will figure out how to bypass the vape detectors within weeks so that won't accomplish much.

I could care less if some kids choose to vape. I'm really more concerned that my kids learn something or have a reading group once a month.

ES reading groups? That went away after return to in-person school, after one year of virtual. Students needing help still meet with teacher while rest of class reads in a "group" on their own.

Are schools less safe than they were in the 90s? Real question here. I went to Blair, we had stabbings and one year a kid fell out of window in a fight. It didn't affect me - most kids just avoid and know how to avoid.

I feel like the big change is the easy access to and proliferation of guns. The drugs and gangs were always here in big public schools.

Could they try and focus on education instead?

That was a pilot. So they were put in temporarily and then removed after the pilot. Even though the public has not been made aware of the results of this pilot. The funds from JUUL will go toward permanent purchase and installation of the vape detectors.

Have any of your schools tried anything different to improve school bathrooms?

Given the abundance of "school-to-prison pipeline" types within MCPS, I highly doubt it. Loudoun County is more politically conservative than MoCo.

I also went to Blair and agree— people have been complaining about safety issues/decline of quality/education/gangs at Blair since even before my time there. It’s kind of funny to see parents repeating the same complaints that people said in 2001. We also had fights/problems which did not affect 99% of the student population.

The gun thing is new and definitely scarier; back in my day, it was knives.
