It pisses me off to no end that there is this massive crisis happening with young kids dying every day and many others spending their days contemplating their mortality while nothing is done to protect them from the violence. Instead, what is getting prioritized are dead dogs, bike lanes, ebike vouchers.

Apparently the important stakeholders in this city are concerned that their dog could’ve died or their kid could’ve been the one that got hit by a car, but are not so concerned about the kids who spend their days worrying about dodging bullets.

DC needs to come to grips with the reality that there is no longer an educational path for thousands of teen AA kids. An already uphill battle was completely derailed during the ill advised school shutdowns. Truancy rates are through the roof. No amount of tutoring or enrichment will get these kids anywhere near earning a diploma worth the paper it is written on. These kids need to be immediately identified and put on a vocational track. Otherwise they will have no alternative to crime to provide for themselves.

THIS. And they have to be gotten back in schools for that to work. That truancy was not a HUGE focus of Bowser for this school year was shocking to me, esp with a lot of violent crime committed by juveniles during the school day last year, or when schools were delayed. The human toll on individuals is unacceptable and the societal toll of the status quo is horrific.

I understand that we don't enforce truancy laws because the punishment (e.g., incarcerating the parents of the truant child) is viewed as worse than the child not receiving an education. I would propose repealing truancy laws (which really were put in place when the social fabric was different and folks could be shamed into sending their kids to school) and replacing them with financial incentives for academic performance by lower-SES students. Basically, replace the stick with a carrot.

Measured by what achievement standard? DCPS already seems watered down.

It’s a lot closer to the “other extreme” than you seem capable of realizing. If you read the WSJ story, they literally have an old lady saying that she now carries a gun to go to work.

DC has a higher per capital murder rate now than Baltimore. As has been written about repeatedly, it is one of the only big cities in the country where violent crime continues to rise since it spiked everywhere during COVID.

The situation right is bad and the city is in bad shape. Just this year two members of Congress have been violent crime victims. DC’s violent crime is now making international news and I don’t think the CBC or BBC are invested in trying to diminish DC out of some racist conspiracy.

There is no reason to downplay the situation just because you don’t want to validate a small minority of loud mouth morons.
