I understand that we don't enforce truancy laws because the punishment (e.g., incarcerating the parents of the truant child) is viewed as worse than the child not receiving an education. I would propose repealing truancy laws (which really were put in place when the social fabric was different and folks could be shamed into sending their kids to school) and replacing them with financial incentives for academic performance by lower-SES students. Basically, replace the stick with a carrot. |
| Odd - right wing media pushing the DC crime story and people leaving while right wing groups are purchasing real estate all over Cap Hill. |
NYT and WPost are right wing now? |
Measured by what achievement standard? DCPS already seems watered down. |
A lot of folks are deciding to break their brains down a rabbit hole of conspiracy theories and denial rather than accept basic facts. It concerns me as a Democrat to see liberals turn into reality denying maniacs as a bookend to the right wing nut jobs. We should all be concerned that these are significant numbers of people on both sides who are both the most politically vocal and also appear fully detached from reality. |

DC has crime issues that it needs to deal with, but it isn't Fallujah or Mogadishu, either.
The truth is somewhere BETWEEN where the "don't talk about crime" morons are and the other extreme of hyperbolic rants about having to strap iron and moving out of the city |
Really? Elaborate please? |
It’s a lot closer to the “other extreme” than you seem capable of realizing. If you read the WSJ story, they literally have an old lady saying that she now carries a gun to go to work. DC has a higher per capital murder rate now than Baltimore. As has been written about repeatedly, it is one of the only big cities in the country where violent crime continues to rise since it spiked everywhere during COVID. The situation right is bad and the city is in bad shape. Just this year two members of Congress have been violent crime victims. DC’s violent crime is now making international news and I don’t think the CBC or BBC are invested in trying to diminish DC out of some racist conspiracy. There is no reason to downplay the situation just because you don’t want to validate a small minority of loud mouth morons. |

Homicides thru July:
Down 34 percent in Pittsburgh Down 32 percent in Atlanta Down 21 percent in Los Angeles Down 21 percent in Philadelphia Down 8 percent in Chicago Down 7 percent in St Louis Down 4 percent in Detroit Up 5 percent in NYC Up 11 percent in Washington DC —Council on Criminal Justice |
DC still stands for Dysfunctional City. |
| And to think only a few months ago our enlightened DC Council was still pushing its failed Crime Legalization Bill that Biden thankfully vetoed. Imagine how much worse crime would be now!! |
