Isn't it more practical to set a calendar for the year and stick with it?

Nope. Those last few days kids aren’t paying attention in the first place. Tons of parents take early vacations. Attendance is dismal. Actually most school districts that have built in snow days do this, it’d be nice if MCPS caught up.

MCPS only adds 2 extra days and usually uses both of them.

DP, but it used to be 3-4 and they definitely didnt use all of them. The other poster is correct in saying MCPS is behind the times in general. Most school districts have one half day a week, most have fall breaks, sooo many have had virtual offerings well before COVID was a thing. It seems the parents in this county who never left are really stubborn and intent on sticking to the old ways that worked when they were in school instead of evolving with the rest of the world into the future. The BOE is afraid of these parents so nothing ever happens in terms of enacting change.

This is maybe getting off topic but do most districts really have one half day a week? I know it's common, just not sure how common. I'm probably in the minority but I really wish that were a thing.

A lot of private schools do it, and some public schools really short on cash do it to save money - some even go to 4 day school weeks.

Huh. I grew up with it and have observed it in many districts. I thought it was an old-fashioned policy in line with half day kindergarten (that said, I personally would prefer it).

Up until the 2012ish FCPS did this. Every Monday was a half day.

The town I used to live in did this. It replaced random half days and days off.

We moved here a few years ago from AZ. It was still the standard norm. It was 20ish years ago when I was in school there too.

I want to make a suggestion! I am loving the day off today the day after Halloween. I’d recommend they shift the PD end of quarter grading day by one day to Nov. 1 again next year (in calendar sample 1, which is obviously the option they want). And Nov.1 is a Friday so even though you eliminate that long weekend they have with Nov. 4&5, you’d gain a long weekend after Halloween and have kids who can recover from the late night and excitement.

This came up at the board meeting, and they said they set the end of quarter grading day as Monday because they were trying to avoid having no school Friday, then a school day on Monday, then no school on Tuesday for Election Day.

I can understand that rationale, but i would reply that they should perhaps have BOTH the Friday and Monday in these circumstances.

I can understand that perspective but I still prefer the day off on the Friday if I were given the choice.

Then they would have to add another day somewhere else.

Or at least a half day.

The last day of school is already planned for Friday, June 13, 2025. I would not want them to add on a half day on Monday the 16th in order to have an extra day off in November.

Is October 16 one of the pocket religious holidays? If not, they could change it to a half day instead of full PD day, and give 11/1 off.

I wish they would make 11/1 a day off for students every year. It made for a much nicer Halloween.
