I disagree and was also at the game. I left slightly early along with many kids. It was pretty clear that MoCo needed much more police presence on the street by that point.

Not enough police anymore to provide necessary security.

Let’s be concrete. How many police were stationed at metro in the 30-45 minutes following the end of the game?

The video shows a pretty big crowd - 20 people at least including a number of girls who are throwing punches and stomping someone. Some of the assailants can be clearly identified. The police and school authorities should have lots of evidence. It sounds like the schools did a lot to try to prevent this from happening; maybe they just need to ban student attendance at games altogether? It's outrageous.

Btw there was a BCC student last year who beat another student with a chair. It made the news and provoked a thread here at the time. One of my DCs graduated from BCC in May and I was shocked to hear the kid's name called for graduation - and he got huge cheers from the crowd. Despite the fact that he'd been violent repeatedly during his time at BCC. I have another kid still at BCC and I think it's a fantastic school in many ways. But there's something really wrong, obviously.

This is exactly the problem. Imagine being allowed to beat another student with a chair and graduate from that school.

There are no consequences for vile criminal behavior and that is directly the result of the school board.
People need to wake up.
If you care about nothing else you should at least care that bad schools drive property values down.

The in school incident is an mcps issue but this was not on mcps property and at the metro. This is a police issue and a parenting issue. Child should be arrested and charged as an adult. Mcps needs more security but mcps is not to blame for this if it is not on property.

Property values es are the least of my concern. Safety is. Maybe these things are happening as the parents are not focused on their kids and their behavior.

Get this through your head:
It ceases to become a parenting issue when it effects my children. Now it's a societal issue and I expect the system including both the schools and the police to protect my children.

I could give a flying fig less about thugs mom and dad issues.

You need to protect your own kids as if you are expecting others to it’s not going to happen. This did not happen at school and police cannot be everywhere.

The basic reason people elected to be governed and pay taxes was for protection. If you're okay with living in a county that doesn't understand metro need police protection after a rivalry game then you are part of the problem.

People who stayed silent about removing SROs, about demonizing all police and not just bad police, are a huge part of the problem. This county's leadership is hostile toward law enforcement and state leadership passed several laws that makes it almost impossible to question and arrest juveniles. Sadly, juveniles are committing a huge share of the violent crime. So where do we go from here?

It was so disappointing to watch those videos. I teach elementary and we have been dealing with an increase in disruptive behavior since covid, but we hope that we can teach them out of it by the time they reach high school age. In some cases I guess we can’t.

WJ
The score had nothing to do with it. Either they brought ski masks because they were looking for an opportunity to fight or they knew they were going to lose.

What's the staffing shortage in Bethesda district? Last winter it had the highest vacancy rate in the county. What are the 911 call response times? Oh that's right, they've gone much higher over the past year. How many people can't get through to 911 or get placed on hold for several minutes? Go check next door for all the complaints.

This is the answer. Extreme progressive politics is harmful to citizens. We csn be a great inclusive county without destroying it.

Several WJ students who were either alone or in a small groups were brutally jumped/attacked by larger mobs of others. They may or may not have all been BCC students as the aggressors.

My children were at the game (WJ students) and both shared that the game itself felt safe and well-managed. Attendance was limited AND the game started earlier than other games during the season.

There is a strong possibility that many of the aggressors in Bethesda were not even at the game and just waited for it to get out.

The principals font write those emails. They were written by central office. They could have said what we saw which is that bad actors from one school stalked and assaulted students from another school in a premeditated gang attack.
But people would wake up to that and what it means real quick.
This is more of the mcps hidden agenda

Or letting the police conduct their investigation while avoiding risk of libel?

This is not the result of the pandemic or the removal of SROs -- at least those factors cannot bear the entire blame.
Maybe it's time these schools stop playing each other.

This was the note sent in January 2020:

Dear Walter Johnson High School and Bethesda-Chevy Chase Community Members,

We wanted to alert our communities that after the basketball game at B-CC there were several altercations among the students. Both schools had administrators, security and police present. Despite these measures, altercations still broke out on and off campus, eventually resulting in three arrests. We believe these incidents were a continuation of vandalism on both campuses earlier in the week. Apparently, B-CC students spray painted the WJ shed that the seniors paint as a tradition going into their senior year. In retaliation, apparently WJ students spray painted the brick building and the school’s electronic sign at B-CC. These acts resulted in thousands of dollars of damage to the schools and a full police investigation. These acts are all completely unacceptable and both schools will work collaboratively to determine the facts and administer appropriate consequences. At any school event safety is our top concern and our expectation is always that students will follow all school rules and laws in order to assure they are able to enjoy school events with their peers. Please speak to your children about the importance of school rules and their key role in helping all school events be fun, safe and enjoyable activities.

Sincerely,
Shelton Mooney
Acting Principal, Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School

Jennifer Baker
Principal, Walter Johnson High School

That's an bs answer to a real problem with allowing thugs to get off Scott free.
The cheerleaders, band members, athletes, pom squads, dance teams, etc work very hard. Instead of doling out consequences to the the criminals, the hard workers should be punished?
Sounds just like more of the politicians behind the current state of decline

Because there's no one to sue for the lie "a large group of fighters on both sides" sounds like trump with his both sides.

DP. The cheerleaders, band members, athletes, pom squads, dance teams, etc. aren't there as spectators.

My child was at the game and hanging out in Bethesdalast night. She said there were tons of police officers everywhere around Bethesda Row. The problem here isn’t a lack of officers but perhaps too many on the Bethesda Row side and not enough by the metro, where there have been fights before.

The "hidden agenda" of not letting your official communications get out ahead of the established facts.
