How?
The teacher calls herself Dr. at school.
By the teacher's own social media posts that she has put out to the public -- she doesn't call herself a doctor on LinkedIn or even mention she has a PhD. Her LinkedIn is completely viewable by the public. On her Facebook page, she says she has a PhD in Educational Studies, but doesn't say from where or when. That information she has provided is also left publicly viewable - along with her current job description that she is a "Protector of little people in purgatory."
VADOE database does not show she has a PhD or EdD -- just a bachelor's and master's.

These are facts - facts that she herself has supplied publicly.

So, how is that defamation that I've posted about it? Defamation is a false statement presented as a fact.

Right, but my point was we should collectively care about the kids still remaining at the school. Any unethical behavior that is happening in our county is a problem that impacts our community, and shouldn’t be pushed under the rug. These are public school employees being compensated by tax dollars we all pay. We should focus beyond our own needs and support ethical behavior for all teachers teaching in our school system.
She's the one that has provided the information. She's the one who has called herself Dr.

How? Because it doesn’t matter what she calls herself. It could be a nickname. She could have a credential you don’t know about or isn’t listed. It doesn’t matter. What matters is you seem hell bent on ruining her reputation. This thread alone, with the identifying information, is enough to get you sued into oblivion. Your threats to go to the board suggest you want her to face some sort of consequences (for what? She hasn’t done anything wrong!). That’s what defamation is — lies about something that causes injury to their reputation.

I hope you do get sued. I am not a teacher, I am a parent. But your behavior as you describe it is far more egregious than anything this poor teacher has done in terms of honorifics she chooses for herself.

Back the hell off.

NP here, just read this whole thread. It is entirely proper to resolve this discrepancy. The person states they have a PhD in one source but in others only the lower degrees are verified — this absolutely requires explanation.

Not op here either. Have to say I agree. Requires explanation. A big discrepancy. I wouldn’t want my kids to be calling a professional by incorrect title. It’s unethical and the teacher is not leading with integrity if they are requesting that title to be used and haven’t actually earned doctorate.

But OP’s kids DO NOT GO TO THE SCHOOL. Amazingly, this woman appears to be OP’s neighbor and friend.

Noooo -- not neighbor (family moved awhile ago) and not friend, ever.

And I appreciate the PP who said it requires an explanation -- but as I said previously, after reading so many responses, I was no longer looking for a response from the teacher or administration. This thread early on showed me that the majority of people were totally fine if she called herself and didn't have a doctorate OR suggested she did have one and just never reported it when she got it and didn't chose to report it and get the pay raise when she renewed her license in June.
Someone asked then what I did want - I wrote:

[b]I think I would feel GREAT if it turns out VADOE was wrong. YAY - she can report it and get a pay raise!!
And if she really doesn't have it -- I think I would just like to see her be called Ms. or Mrs. X.

And so, I sent an email to the teacher, shared here, without asking for any response or explanation. Done.

I have felt such relief, as I said yesterday, that it's now out and I am thankful for this group for showing me that I could!

Not to say that I'm not sad that so many people really don't care if she calls herself a Dr or not and really went after me for caring (am I autistic? just bat shit crazy? So many shots at my sanity!). But then again, after reading some of the other recent threads about FLE and calendars... heck, there is a lot of crazy out there!

The VDOE website does not list all my degrees. It does correctly list my endorsements, which is the part that matters to the legitimacy of my license . My principal probably doesn't know all my degrees or where they are from, because he managed hundreds of people and trusts that HR vetted me appropriately. My social media doesn't list all my degrees because I'm not a braggart and I haven't bothered to update my profile since I got it. HR does know my degree and the school that awarded it, and they pay me accordingly, which is the only part that matters to me.

You are convinced that this teacher is misrepresenting herself because she chose not to document her educational career in a way that satisfies you, when she is under no obligation to do so.

According to the VADOE, if a teacher has a degree that they are being paid for, it would be listed in the Education section of their license on the website.
FCPS EER says if there isn't a doctorate listed on that license, they are not getting paid for a doctorate.

So as many posters have pointed out -- why should I care what she calls herself? It's not like she's getting paid as a Dr.

Are you saying that is not true? That you received a new degree, that gave you a bump in pay, but it does not and will not show in the Education section of your license on the website?

Well, the context matters. A medical doctor who lies? A researcher who does? Yep, that’s a big deal. But a doctorate is basically irrelevant to good teaching. Studies have shown the lack of connection between education and what makes a teacher a good one. I believe those were about Master’s degree but the same would hold here. Right- we wouldn't want someone who is TEACHING children to demonstrate the legitimate value of educational attainment honestly. I'm honestly horrified at the number of people in this thread who think a teacher lying about her education is acceptable. I certainly wouldn't want her teaching my kids

Me, too. It’s repulsive. Every person should lead with integrity. We should expect that from anyone. So gross how people trivialize and victimize OP.

Well, the kids don’t know she’s lying unless you’ve told them. So they didn’t learn a bad lesson from that unless you told them.

What? Your reasoning lacks critical thinking. The kids are being misled by an unethical behavior. Why would any parent want their children taught by that. I agree with op that it is ok to ask as if the teacher has degree it just needs to be updated. What’s wrong with asking? Especially if teacher is obligating children to call her a tutor she never earned. That’s the disgraceful part.

Look, OP. It’s clear in all of your “supporting” “NP” replies that English isn’t your first language. Agreeing with yourself will get your threads taken down. Just FYI.

Just FYI.

Nope. not me! And English is MY first language. Totally agree if I was sock puppeting it should be taken down... but I'm not. So it won't. Well, at least not for that!

Let me clarify something’s for you OP.
1. Not only does it take the state forever to update their system but it also requires the teacher to pay to have the system updated.
2. VDOE does not determine teacher’s pay. They give out the licenses and review the requirements for those but do not require constant updates of degrees.
3. The people who determine a teachers pay and what level they are paid is their county. There is really no benefit to paying for VDOE to update their database regarding your degree.

In the end, your basing your judgment of a teacher on things that do not require updates. And your list of reasons why you should know this person on a personal level are not exactly “personal”. You can’t say you KNOW anything about her choices. Like a PPer said- maybe she just doesn’t care to flaunt her education. My daughter had a teacher 3 years ago in elementary school who would get mad at the kids if they forgot to call her Dr. __ or address her as Dr. in emails. Does this teacher put people down for not calling her Dr.? I feel like you have a grudge for your kid being accused of something and instead of focusing on your family, you are wasting your energy on this. She may not be your kids teacher anymore but you always are. Honestly, it sounds like you should take 2 minutes to talk to this teacher instead of attacking her. You may find out you’ve been obsessing over nothing. But I can guarantee you that NO ONE will want to respond to someone in the way you’ve handled this.

I’m calling it: Narcissistic Personality Disorder.

And just did her no favors by pointing to her thread, even though he said she sounds crazy.

OP: can we interest you in a timeshare in Mar-A-Lago

PS, if you get to decide, sua spontena, that Dr. X isn’t a doctor, I get to agree with PP that Ernglish is not your first language.

BTW— did you ever clarify your own degree. Uouve said it’s an MEd and a PhD at various points. You’ve also said highly regulated, requiring renewals, which is not MEd or PhD. So Dr. Crazy Pants, what is your degree?
